So fixit has a 128 ram upgrade for $400 less than the apple option and OWC has a thunderbolt 3 - 4 tb drive just as fast as the internal same price as the upgrade. So you get 5 tb for same price. This is less than one month after release.

Apple is legendary for charging whimsical amounts of money for RAM. Personally, I've always gone third-party for Mac RAM upgrades. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't make that comfortable with the iMac Pro.

I'm anxious to see what they have in store for the regular Mac Pro.

Agree. Even when the price goes down in a few years after the warranty, it will still be a pain to do it yourself because you have to completely disassemble it. The new Mac Pro may be considered the first computer design apple does without Steve Job's input. it should be an interesting tell for a lot of things apple.

Also remember that Jobs was never the hardware person - he was just the ideas/money man; hardware was Woz's part. Sadly he no longer has anything to do with the company.

Woz was the hardware guy in the 1980s. I don't think he's had much impact on Apple's design philosophy since the Second Coming of Steve.

Phil Schiller is probably the guy with the most influence on the direction of the Mac at this point. He's not a technical guy, but he's the one who tries to sort out what customers want and how to meet those expectations. Johnny Ive makes it all look pretty.

Honestly, it seems so simple. Just bring back the cheese grater, with modern specs, and price it reasonably. That's all the Mac Pro customers want.

Actually Woz was the hardware guy from the beginning. Jobs was never all that good at h/w design.

You'll get no argument there. I think Apple eventually admitted they screwed up with the iTrashcan. Along with this - don't close it off to being user upgradable with third party parts.

I have a Focusrite Saffire Firewire Interface and a MacBook Pro from late 2016.

After 3 to 4 hours of online research, trying to figure out how to put those two things together, I decided to just try it the following way:

Saffire Pro 40 FW 400 --> FW 800 Adapter --> OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock Station (which you can find on Amazon) --> Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3/Usb-c Adapter

I can officially confirm that it works that way!
