Default Sandhill Cranes: Knobs, Faders & Joysticks

[SANDHILL CRANES: KNOBS, FADERS & JOYSTICKS]

This one should be fun. I wanted to experiment and show how to take advantage of Knobs, Faders and Joysticks for various types of parameters when working on a sound design. For this example, we look at placing sound sources within Dolby Atmos space, adding effects, and leveraging folders, spill zones and master module functions to work efficiently and in context - with multiple controls at once.

The sound examples are re-recorded from the Binaural output of the Dolby Renderer - so if you want to hear the correct placement you should put on headphones.

Default [Edit & Mix Window Follows]

[EDIT & MIX WINDOW FOLLOWS PREFS]

Let's take a brief look at a few micro features that were added to Pro Tools 2022.9 + EUCON 2022.9.

In Pro Tools under Setup > Preferences > Mixing > Controllers > you will find the following:
Edit Window Follows: Banking, Select
Mix Window Follows: Banking, Select

These options now give you the granularity to determine whether you want the Pro Tools Edit + Mix Windows to respond to Banking functions from the console and also track Selection when performed from the desk.

Track Selection can be super useful to quickly orient the Pro Tools Edit Window to jump to a chunk of tracks - either from standard Banking, spilled VCA's or Folders or from Track Layouts. Check it out.

Default [22.12: Custom Mapping: Switched Parameters]

[22.12: Custom Mapping: Switched Parameters]

Let's dig into new functionality included in EUCON 22.12 for S4 & S6, with more control over how to leverage the Knobs and Faders on your desk to optimize your custom maps.

When assigning parameters with Custom Mapping, you can either drag a parameter over to a Knob or Fader and maintain the default switched behavior, tear off a single discrete parameter to map, or assign the selected parameter as a 2nd Function - which can be accessed by pressing the SEL switch associated with that Knob or Fader.

Ultimately, it makes it much easier to get exactly the control interface you want for any type of signal processing plug-in.

Default [22.12: Master Module Panner Improvements]

[22.12: Master Module Panner Improvements]

Let's take a quick look at some of the improvements you will observe on the Panner interface of the Home page on S4 or S6 based systems.

Gestures:
One Finger: Position the puck in X Y space.
Two Fingers - Pinch or Compress: Adjust the Z or Height.
Three Fingers: Position the virtual room when in 3D mode

Secondary Parameters:
If a parameter control has another function which can be toggled via the SEL switch - such as Center % / Side % or Front / Rear Position, a (rotated C) Peer indicator is present on all virtual encoders on the Master Module and physical encoders for that function on the channel strips.

Default [22.12: Channel Strip Keys]

[22.12: Channel Strip Keys]

Let's take an expanded look at the new Channel Strip Keys - which are accessed from Settings > Soft Keys but are completely independent of your primary Soft Keys - whether factory or customized.

Channel Strip Keys allow you to completely modify the switches surrounding the scribble strips for each channel, either Globally or by Track Type. Certainly Track Type is the most powerful way to go - especially when you have specialized tracks like Folders and VCA Masters in your sessions. For those two, Spilling is likely one of the most important functions which can be made more efficient by simply placing the desired Zone on the top level. Conversely, Input and Record are never going to be associated with a Folder Track - so you can free up those default functions for options more appropriate to your workflow.

New Functions:

Copy Paste Plug-In Settings: quickly copy and paste between strips. It is also possible to paste to multiple insert locations on one or multiple strips and to copy paste between different widths.

Add to Layout: quickly add multiple strips to a Track Layout without having to select them from the Tracks matrix.

Display Global Meter Layout: cycle through the Display Track Type association whereby you can always have a specific display view for any given track type.

Lot's of great stuff to explore, so this one is a bit lengthy.

Default [22.12: Channel Strip Keys: Automation]

[22.12: Channel Strip Keys: Automation]

The Channel Strip Keys include dedicated functions for cycling automation modes for each channel. Users can customize which automation modes are included in the cycle and the order in which they are presented.

From Settings > Soft Keys > Channel Strip Keys > touch the A switch to access the Automation Mode Cycle list. Use the tick boxes to add or remove automation modes and the up/down arrows to change each mode's order.

Depending on the age and revision of your Fader Module or Channel Strip Module, the automation cycling switch will either be labeled as A or F.

Just like the standard Channel Strip Keys, modifiers such as Attention can be applied and engaged to define an alternate set of automation cycling - for those modes which are used less frequently.

Default [22.12: Automation: Auto Take Over]

[22.12: Automation: Auto Take Over]

Let's take a closer look at new Automation capabilities in S4 S6 22.12 when used in combination with Pro Tools 22.12. Auto Take Over is a new mode which we appropriated from the System 5 console. When engaged, the user determines how fast or slow the existing volume automation will match back to the underlying automation by simply completing the fader move to dovetail into the last automation pass. Once you intersect the underlying automation boundary (either from above or from below), the channel will be automatically punched out.

Auto Take Over can be used in Touch, Touch/Latch, Latch and even Trim automation modes.

Global ATO can be accessed by creating a Soft Key via Surface > Operations > Global ATO. Essentially, Global ATO can be triggered while actively writing volume automation on multiple faders as an alternative to engaging multiple (F / A) automation mode cycle switches.
