Default playback engine errors are killing

I am working with MBOX on Windows XP I am always receiving the lower or raise the buffer speed errors when recording and during playback. I can record up to 20-30 seconds max before I recieve an error telling me the "audio processing is conflicting with other CPU tasks" or "operating system held off for too long" - 9093

What can I do? I am operating on a great computer 512 MB of Ram, pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz

I tried the advice from the answer base it didn't help. I did disable the hyperthreading and that appeared to lessen the frequency of the error, but honestly not being able to record more than 30 seconds is lousy!

Anyone have a suggestion or some kind of advice on adjusting my set ups?
