Default External Hard Drive

Can someone explain to me how to setup pro tools to record to a folder on an external hard drive?

We will need your system specs - it's different if you're using Win 7 vs. Mac and desktop vs. laptop (assuming one FW if applicable). And since you're in the PT9 section, we can assume you are speaking of PT9, correct?

On a Mac, just "Save As" and select your location.

When you create a new session, it will ask you where you want to save it. Save it on the external drive.

PT9 recommends using USB for your external HD if you're using Windows 7... I think this is due to the change in drivers used by Windows 7 FW.

I do know that USB is less stable for streaming audio due to the larger audio buffer used in the USB protocal. If it works for you, great - if not, I know that you can change the driver back to the pre-windows 7 driver via the Hardware section and use a FW interface.

IF you are using FW to the hard drive and to your audio device, daisy chain the audio device to the hd and then to the computer (unless you have two FW ports).

That's the hardware side - for the actual saving - follow the above stated - simply save your session to the external HD and all your audio will be stored there.

Regards,
Robert.
