Default 001 signal path for guitar plug ins

Just curious how people are inputing the signal from an electric guitar (humbucker pickups)into PTLE via Digi 001. I'm thinking of picking up Amplitude, BF Sans Amp, etc., or maybe an external modeller and wondering what other costs I would incur w/ Amplitude. Have people have good enough signal to "drive" Amplitude going direct into 001 (I would assume channels 1 or 2 using the gain)? Or would a good direct box be a necessary investment?

If I'm not actually mic-ing an amp, I run a POD 2.0 into a JoeMeek British channel and then into PT. Works great.
Don't know about Amplitube, since I bought my PT two weeks before that promotion started (!)

I've gone straight into the 001 through the 1/4" on the front with stock PRS pick-ups, and used Amplitube and BFD's Sans Amp and it sounds great. I have also gone the DI, preamp, to the 001 way and that was good also. I think just straight in gives me fine results and anything else is subjective to taste. An active DI can save the day sometimes, especially if you have weak output pick-ups.
