Ideal Signal Path

If money was no object, what would you guys consider the ideal signal path to your Digi?
Let's say you're recording an acoustic guitar in stereo, starting with the mics, what would be your dream set-up, in a project studio? For me (not from experience), I'd start with a pair of matched Neumann TLM-103's, into an Avalon AD-2022, then into an Apogee Rosetta, and off to the Digi.

Well, in terms of dream gear, I'd have a SSL console, and Neuman U87's all 'round.
Oh, and 48 or 64 tracks of 2" reel to reel tape machines.

but that's at least a few years away(if only...).


Oh, one more thing... all monster cables...

This would be pretty nice except for compression and possibly some EQ.

I just went for the Langevin Dual Vocal combo to solve this. Need that Rosetta
though. I guess there are better mic's with unlimited budget but 103/Langevin/Rosetta get close to the top for mic/pre/EQ/comp/AD path.

With 10K I'd be using TDM on an Athlon 1.4 Ghz, A7M266 motherboard in a Vapochilled case overclocked to 2Ghz and I'd be using my Rode NT1 straight into the TDM. I'd have a 42" Plasma Flat screen with 64 Tracks all showing up on the same screen. Then I'd invite all my friends from Nashville to come out to a Grand Opening party and allow them to do free recording in exchange for doing some tracks for me. Hmmmmm, I like it.

What would guys consider the best under 5K$ Mic-Pre out there? I've heard Manley, Drawmer, Gordon... but I like the Avalon. Are these others better?

Personally I wouldn't bother at all with the Rosetta, the low end Apogee stuff isn't really all it's cracked up to be. If you were looking at a DCS, Weiss or Prism then it would be a different story.

I'd go TLM103 -> Avalon 737VT -> digi001 (balanced of course) i've used this configuration (with a U47 instead) for doing vocals a lot and it works beautifully.

The 737 gives you valve preamp, compression and eq and sounds lovely!

Hi!

What's up with you guys, I thought we where talking of thinking big!

So, check this one out:

For a great acoustic guitar recording, we need a great acoustic guitar (remember, that's were the sound comes from, we want to record. If the sound is already crapped up in this stage, it's TOO LATE!). Let's say a good Martin or Gibson.
Also a great player is vital, I think these two points are kind of underestimated.

The next thing is a recording room with a great acoustic. (Also underestimated)

Now comes the equipment:

2 Brauner VM-1s
Manley Tube Pre-Amp
Focusrite Red-3 Compressor
Focusrite Red-2 EQ (to boost the Hi's a little)
Apogee PSX100 AD/DA Converter

Use the Apogee as Clock-Master for less Jitter.
Of course you can use monster cables for the connections.

Another point is: You should have a good control room, so you can really tell, that that what you're recording sounds good! Don't forget that there come things like microphone placement into play!

And if we have a good sounding room, let's put some ambience mic's in there! (Using the Apogee AD8000 for more inputs now)

By the way: Already heard of the new Neumann Mic-System with a AD-Converter within the Microphone!?

But switching back to reality: go and get a pair of Oktava Mk012 small diaphragm microphones! Worth four times their price! Great for: acoustic guitars, violins, contra bass, violas, choir overheads, drums overheads, hihat, snaredrum, ambience, guitar amps. I even did lead vocals with them once.
