Default OSX Midi Device Patch Names (how)?

Can someone clarify in detail how exactly is Mac OS X's MIDI device patch lists method handled? (...like how do you go about retrieving external midi device patch names, so these will be seen in PT 6?) Obviously since there is no longer the OMS or Freemidi environment in OSX, we now have core audio & midi. But I'm completely in the dark on how to get patch names (factory & user banks) from my external midi devices into the OSX core midi environment.

Are there any useful informative (in detail) sites with explanations, diagrams etc. that may be more helpful in this area?
