But aren't they reverse engineering and breaking the encryption of Digi's session files?

I wonder if there are intellectual property and trademark issues. It'll be interesting to see if there is a response either legally or by simply changing the encryption in some way. I personally have no need for anything like this.

I am not aware on a legal or ethical issue with reverse engineering? It is just something curious people and companies do. It all depends what you do with the knowledge gained.

Each case is unique. Apogee converters are recognized as Pro Tools|HD interfaces through the miracle of reverse engineering. Now SSL has reverse engineered a Pro Tool session document (its not "encrypted") to produce their Pro Convert product. Did Digidesign go after Apogee? I don't think so. Will they go after SSL? That remains to be seen. One feature of Pro Tools is that you can save and open session documents going as far back as v3.2. Will Digidesign burden their testing grid and users by having v7.5 use a different session document format? If they did, and SSL reverse engineered it, would a future version have yet a different session document format? Only time will answer these questions.

If the devil’s in the details, it should be mentioned that the app is PC (Windoms)-only and, according to the cats at SSL’s NAMM booth, there are no plans to reverse that. Also, currently featuring no direct support for MOTU’s Digital Performer — a puzzling oversight.

IHTH.
