Default iLok pairing problem PT10

Hi, I am a public high school teacher.

I recently purchased 11 copies of PT10 for educational institutions (cheaper than the educational version for individuals), and have successfully registered all 11 copies at AVID and transferred the licenses onto the 11 iLoks provided. The software has also been successfully installed onto the school computers.

However, it seems that once an iLok is used with a certain computer to run PT, ONLY THAT ILOK will work again on that computer, and if tried, the other 10 iLok will cause the standard "error, missing ilok authorisation of..." message to display on startup. In other words it seems as though iLoks are somehow pairing with computers.

It is my understanding (and experience) that this is not how iLok licences are supposed to work... Am I wrong? Is there something funny about the educational institutions version which makes it different?

I have tried this on my latest model retina macbook pro with the same results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

iLok licenses are generic. As long as the proper license is on the iLok, and the iLok is recognized by the computer, it will authorize the launch of that version of Pro Tools.

If you have a system not behaving this way, unplug and replug the iLok to make sure it is properly recognized. They do occasionally not register properly even when lit up.

The next step would be to log in to ilok.com without moving the iLok and make sure iLok.com recognizes the iLok. Use ilok.com to verify that the authorization is on the iLok.

Unless theres something special about the educational version you should be able to move an iLok to any machine and have it work. Theres certainly no issue doing that with the regular version.

Are these Windows machines or Macs? Windows machines have a nasty habit with USB ports where if you use a different port for something than where that device originally was when first installing any drivers for said device it won't always work. Hot swapping is another thing that can cause problems (at least it has for me) - never really works like it should.

By using the iLok website, I have narrowed down the cause of this problem on my Retina Macbook Pro to incompatibilities with USB3 (RMBP's only have USB3 ports). If I connect one of the iLok2's to a USB port on my RMBP, it will very occasionally be recognised by the iLok website or by Pro Tools. If it is recognised by the iLok website it is always recognised by Pro Tools.

However, if I connect an iLok2 to a USB2 hub coming out the back of my thunderbolt display it ALWAYS works. The bizarre thing is that the "System Information" application ALWAYS recognises the iLok even when it is in a USB3 port, and the blue light has ALWAYS come on normally regardless of the port.

I had a look, and there is no comment in the Avid PT 10.3.3 Mac readme about such incompatibilities, although the Windows one states that iLok2's are incompatible with USB3 (PTSW-158204). Would it be safe to assume that incompatibility with USB3 is cross platform? Maybe AVID failed to include it in the Mac readme because USB3 is a fairly recent development on Mac's?

I will have to check the school computers to confirm whether USB3 is the problem there or not...
