Default Help with tempo maps

Howdy

I compose a lot of songs with multiple tempo and meter changes and can use some advice on manipulating the tempo maps. Specifically, if I make changes to a song that already has multiple tempo and meter events, then all of the events after the change get misplaced and I have to do everything over by hand. For example, I may decide to repeat a section in the middle of the song by 2 bars using shuffle mode. So the midi and audio regions all shift over by 2 bars, but the tempo events remain where they were, which screws up the whole tempo map from the time of the edit.

I know there's a better way to do this, but I'm just geting back into MIDI programming in Protools after a long layoff and I'm relearning this stuff. If anyone has any advice or can point me towards a good article it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

When making your changes, make sure you are selecting the tempo and meter timeline as well as your track material (shift+click).

Well I tried that, but the timeline edits remain in place while the audio and midi shift over. I will shift click a section of audio in grid mode (grouped as all), with the timelines selected. Then I will change to shuffle mode and do a duplicate or repeat, and the tempo/meter events don't shift over with everything else.

Should I be doing this differently?

Yes, it sounds like you are not doing it correctly.

I set up a few images of a basic session to show you what I mean:

audio track and tempo changes

Notice the tempo change at bars 5 and 6.

When making a selection to copy, you need to also select the meter timeline, as in this picture

When positioning the cursor for pasting, make sure you also select the meter timeline, as in this picture

In this last picture, the paste has been done in shuffle mode. Notice that the tempo changes are now at bars 6 and 7.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I think I finally got it, however one last question...I can't seem to select tempo and meter timelines simultaneously, it will only let me select one or the other along with the rest of the midi/audio selection. Many of my changes include both tempo and meter changes occurring at the same time, and it would be nice to be able to select the whole thing. I tried shift-click and alt-click and no matter what I can't seem to have both timelines selected

BTW I'm running 6.4

Thanks again! I really appreciate the trouble you went through to post the screen shots.

dood i am able to do what u want
everything except 1 thing
this might be fixed in 7.1
if i moved cut shuffled etc anything
the song data, tempo and signatures would move alright but the song markers wouldnt...
ill sus this out tonite and report back

mess around with selecting from the very top of the ruler between too times and hold shift i think
that will select everything downward including the rulers
do this in grid mode
and then in shuffle mode
duplicate or cut or some command
bang everything should shift along and so forth
however as i was saying...
from memory the markers just sat there!

peace
