Default Protools 6.9 Update req Mediastation PT 1.6 update

When updating our protools TDM system I encoutered some problems I think are woth sharing with other protools users.

First of all, the Sync BOB needs to be at firmware v.1.1.1 (mine was at 1.1.0, so I had to flash it)

When using a V10 for video, MediaStation PT 1.6 is required by Protools to operate with video and audio from Avid systems. This update however is never mentioned in the documentation of the 6.9 update download from the website of Digidesign.

To make things worse, MediaStation 1.6 on it's turn requires Windows XP SP2 to install.

So before you start here's what you need:
  • Windows XP SP2
  • MediaStation PT 1.6
  • Protools 6.9 update
  • Sync firmware update v. 1.1.1
  • A copy of the plug-in folder in the Common Files folder of your system

The last item is quite important as the installer of MediaStation overwrites some of the standard protools plug-ins like EQ II and Dynamics with incompatible versions and the Protools 6.9 installer does not include them anymore.

The correct order in which to install these updates is still not clear to me, but don't do as I did.
Probably the best order to install is:
  • Windows XP SP2
  • MediaStation PT 1.6
  • Protools 6.9 Update
  • Sync firmware update

After this all is installed start Protools and find out which plug-ins don't work and copy the original files back in to the plug-ins folder.

Now all should work fine.

Good luck in updating!

Thanks for the post Marco.

As you mention, Media Station|PT 1.6 installs incorrect versions of 3 Digi plug-ins: EQII, Dynamics II, and Signal generator. If the correct install order is followed (Pro Tools after Media Station), Pro Tools will properly update these plug-ins to the correct versions. If Media Station was installed after Pro Tools, you will see the message, “The component Dynamics (or EQ or Signal Generator) expired on April 14, 2005. Please update your copy" when launching Pro Tools. For users who run into this, I'd recommend uninstalling the Digidesign Shared Plug-ins from Control Panel>Add/Remove programs, then reinstall the Digidesign Shared Plug-ins from the Pro Tools 6.9 install CD. With this method, you would not need to have a plug-ins folder on the system prior to installing.
