You can feel whenever you want man. But unfortunately facts often get in the way of what you feel...

You can can go to Big Sur 11.2.3. No further than that, otherwise you will have issues, especially if you are use a wifi card. Not recommended to go further.

Well that fact that Open Core has opened the flood gates and able to run 256 of ram is astonishing, I'm sure I'm now utilizing all 128 I would suspect. I remember many were saying these old Mac Pro's would never be able to run Apples new Metal architecture graphics cards. Not only running, but screaming on these old machines.

Martin Lo's script.
14.Possible to run 8x32GB RAM in macOS (user need to mod the config.plist manually. Replace the false below CustomMemory to true

Thanks, I was not aware of that bank 3,4 7,8 shared memory bus thing.

Anyone want to buy 2 8GB DIMMS? LOL

Yes, I'm aware, that's why i'm not going past Catalina. It's more than just WIFI card issues on 11.3 and above. It's a PCI timing issue on boot. You WILL trash your boot drive at some point. Not worth it. Catalina will be supported by PT for another two years.

Yeah I was reading on that if you are using a NVMe boot drive. Sticking with a SSD slot. been rock solid with 11.2.3 for a while now. Indeed 11.3 is a nite-mare. Big Sur is more responsive and snappier that Catalina I've noticed. I"m changing to the boot-loader to boot off USB stick. That way it's so easy to revert to Mojave natively.

Off the Wall, you're currently on Catalina.

Have you tried 11.2.3, not 11.3 ?

On Catalina 10.15.7. From others direct experience, 11.2.3 is fine. 11.3 and above should be avoided at all costs. NVME is just the canary in the coal mine. It’s a PCI timing issue at boot on 11.3+. ANY PCIe boot drive will eventually be corrupted. There is an extensive thread on macrumors forum discussing it. I’d prefer to stay at a fully supported Catalina than run Big Sur and not be able to apply supplemental and security updates.

Thank you for your knowledge and insight. I jumped straight to Big Sur from reading Catalina was not supported as well, only Mojave so I figured I'll just jump to 11.2.3.

Did you use DOSdudes patcher to Catalina then installed open Core 7?

Your thoughts on Open core being able to run 256megs of ram ?
Thank you for your valuable time.

With a MacPro 5,1 there no need for the dosdude patcher. With OpenCore 0.7, a 5,1 can natively update to Catalina or Big Sur right from the Apple App Store/Software Update. Nothing is patched in the OS. Just don’t go above 11.2.3 for now. Maybe the PCI timing error will be resolved but o doubt Apple has any interest in making old machines work. 🤨

As far as 256GB goes. I don’t know anyone running that much ram but they claim it’s possible now.
