I'd zap the nvram/pram first; never did a reset on smc. One more thing - while you have the machine apart change the on-board coin memory battery on the motherboard. Most drug stores should have them.

Thanks and good point on the battery, don't think I have ever repleced mine from the day I bought it new.

Just adding some info, for those doing future searches and come up on this post:

The battery is CR2032 CAUTION PEOPLE! Slide out the old battery towards the back of the case. DO NOT TO LIFT THE CLIP!

Here's a video for battery replacement and instructions on zapping the vram/pram:

No, I am not too familiar with OC yet I've heard and see it all over the place.
How would this help?

Keep in mind I am desperate for as much power as I can get, with all the upgrades to the max I've done on my 5,1 (and yes it's a HUGE improvement) still need more and not ready to spend 10K on the new MacPro

I'm able to boot in older macOS Lion to use old licenses to process audio in PT12. But the real muscle power Open Core unleashes is video acceleration in 4K. Just so happens I'm tackling my first video project, and perfect timing. But for audio I don't really see a vast improvement, but boy does the RX580 fly with Open Core. I can imagine that would naturally take off some CPU load and more on the RX580. For video insanely sick. More Ram insane!

1.Ability to run any natively supported ancient OSX with modern graphic card e.g. Radeon VII in 10.6.8 (only can display, no acceleration) [Update 5th May 2020: Sierra and High Sierra may not fully supported yet.

2.Possible to run 8x32GB RAM ( 256 ) in macOS (user need to mod the config.plist manually. Replace the false below CustomMemory to true)

I just installed OpenCore 0.7 on my 5,1. Mostly in anticipation of bringing the machine to Catalina. Still running Mojave at the moment. The boot picker and startup screen is a plus as well.

Your getting throttled. You machine will actually be quicker if you take out 1 stick per CPU. See below posts to see what slots...

If you have the same CPU as me you should only fill 6 slots.

Anyway. I'm wondering if ther is any benifit going from 48gb to 96gb

I'm running 128. I've read on removing the sticks nearest to both CPU's from overheating and the benefits of triple channel. But I never had any overheating issues and I feel the more ram is better than less ram.

I would love to hear from someone who is running Open Core with 256megs (WOW). 4K acceleration I heard is amazing with Open Core. I just finished my very first video project and it was at 1080 at 26frames. Smooth as heck while editing audio. I have no idea how to gauge that since I've never worked with video before, but it never hiccuped while I was editing audio.
