For a short time Sonic Foundry offered a downloadable virsion to people on there mailing list...It is now going for around $350 retail box...But Steinberg Wavelab 3.0 is 100% better...I have used both and there is no going back to Sound Forge...
Wavelab's FX'S are in real time, Sound Forge you have to highlight a small section you want to preview and hear only about 5 seconds of it, wavelab you could listen to the whole song and mess with the fx's settings while it's playing, and it is much faster program...I could get either one of the programs for cost + 10%...

i'm pretty sure that the $199 version is sound forge 4.5. that's what musician's friend is selling it for. the only price i've found sound forge 5.0 for is $349.99. i have never tried wavelab and don't know how much that is, but i do know that sound forge works great and you can preview the entire song at once in real time with most of the effects. some of them do make you hear just a piece at a time, but you can always highlight a good example section, get your settings right, cancel it, deselect your section and then apply the effect to the whole song. it might sound like a lot of work, but it takes about 10 seconds once you have your settings where you want them. i love sound forge (it was what i first recorded with) and have had nothing but good luck with it. i'd at least download the demo and see how i liked it before making a decision though.

As of August 6, 2001, www.musiciansfriend.com has Sound Forge 5.0 listed at 349$. I bought 5.0 directly from Sonic Foundry a couple months ago for 149$ for the box set (it was also offered in DL only for 99$). www.sonicfoundry.com also has it currently for 349$. I think you will be happy with either program. I use both and have been quite satisfied with both. I think once you use both of the programs (download the demo's and use them), you will find each to have it's own usefulness.

I have also seen Sonic Foundry's products at Best Buy (weird huh?) in Dallas. The price was $149 for SoundForge 5, Acid 3, and Vegas. While I could be wrong, these didn't seem like limmited editions, they were the real deal.

Sammi- I've been using Wave Lab 3.0 and it is a rocking program. I use the waves plug-ins and my CD's come out hot and sounding fat!!! You will want to listen to stuff in real time, Waves makes this possible. I'm not bashing Sound Forge because I have never used it, but Wave Lab rocks. Throw a Waves ultramaximizer and Compressor on there and you are on your way to mastering heaven. It is just alot of burning and tweaking of the settings until you get closer and closer to that commercial sound. Good luck in you decision.
