Default Pitch Bend Midi as a controller?

Hi guys,

sort of a double question, would be obliged for any help!

1. Is pitch bend the midi controller that gives you the most steps (16000 vs 128 on modwheel) and a neutral position? Any reasons to not use it?

2. The neutral position seems to alter whatever parameter I'm trying to influence. If anyone uses a modular set up, it sends out around 3v.

Hopefully this makes sense and maybe fixable via a setting. I'm using mbox 3 pro, pro tools 8.05 and mutant brain to change the midi to voltage.

Interesting idea, but because it zeros out when you release, it may also be a bad idea. Anyway you should be able to remap any CC to another, if not realtime then after a record pass.

Thanks for your reply JFreak,

I'm sorry if i'm being thick, but what do you mean exactly- am i truly stuck with 128 unilateral movement control? Or can I remap the 16000 pitch bend steps to mod wheel? Cause that would be nice:)

Maybe if you tell us what the end goal is, someone may have a better idea

I do not have direct answer to your question nor do I recognize it as a real problem. Because when you are dealing with MIDI your first problem is MIDI clocking which tells you only have 960 ticks per quarter note. That means 6 ticks per sample assuming 48k session and 120BPM. The resolution of a change is not so important in this scenario.

But as said, interesting idea to use pitch bend for something else.

Hey guys,

thanks again for your time in responding to this. Albee good to see you again brother as always.

I was trying to control my modular units with pitch bend, and without the pitch bend working it was a huge issue as i could only control in one direction from wherever I've set the knob on the modular unit. And the 128 steps made it sound really steppy (though a slew module helped a lot there)/

I actually did make it work, so i'm very happy! In case there's a second person out there looking to do this, the problem was not having a note drawn at C0- the other controllers worked fine with no note at all, but for the pitch bend to do all this it needed the note there. Hope this helps someone, been great fun playing about with everything since then.

I wanna learn how to varispeed/record stuff next so look out for my next distressed topic:) Hope you're all keeping well!
