Default Sound Issues in pro tools and windows 11

I have been spending way too much time trying to make intro work instead of actually recording. Sorry, rant. I want so much to create some music and to use pro tools, but among the many problems, I find that getting sound issues fixed seems to be the root cause of my problems.

There are many settings to set before recording. Settings on the focusrite, settings on the focusrite control app, settings in windows 11, settings in pro tools, and then settings on the track itself.

And still I hear no sound.

I connect the acoustic guitar to the focusrite 4i4. I hear the guitar in the headphones connected to the focusrite. No sound in pro tools.

I have the focusrite control set and I see signal from the 4i4 in the focusrite control app. In pro tools, I have the playback engine set to the focusrite asio at 1024. On the track I have it set to input 1 mono and the monitor to stereo 1nd 2. I set the win 11 audio to the focusrite and the win 11 input set to focusrite asio. And while I see the signal on the track, no sound.

I fully realize there may be something incredibly simple that I missed, or that my intelligence level is just not up to the task. Maybe I am just getting old. But almost 2 hours after I picked up the guitar to record a track, I have done nothing but try to make pro tools work. Any help would be so so much appreciated. Thank you.

Hello and welcome to the community.

The first thing I notice about your setup is that you are sharing the audio interface with both Windows and Pro Tools. This is not recommended since Windows will typically get control of the audio interface and Pro Tools will have issues passing audio in and out of the interface. You will need to go into Windows sound settings and tell Windows not to use the Focusrite interface.

There is also a great Learning Center on the Focusrite website that should get you going with Pro Tools and your interface. Simply select Pro Tools and Record Guitar from the dropdowns and it will take you to a tutorial.

Also make sure to read through the Help Us Help You thread for general setup, optimization and troubleshooting tips.

If you still have questions, just post back here and I'm sure someone can get you running.

Indeed, I have windows 11 and PT Intro working on a very old i7 rig(first or second generation) with an Mbox 2 Pro firewire interface and it works great. Make sure to perform all the recommended system tweaks and, as said, set Windows sound properties so Windows uses the on-board sound card for playback. I would also see if youtube has any videos on how to use the Focusrite software for proper routing. One more thing that trips up newbies is; they try to record an instrument(like guitar or bass or keys) to an Instrument track. Instrument tracks are for virtual instruments(plugin instruments). Record anything that makes sound outside of Pro Tools to an AUDIO track. Hope something here helps
