Default best ProTools Free audio input hardware

I want to set up may bassist with PT Free so he can record tracks, burn them to disk and bring them to me so we can import them into a PTLE 5.1.1 001 environment. What cheap, clean 2 or 4 channel audio input setup should I tell him to buy? Sound card line ins are noisy. What kind of latency issues arise with such a setup? He is going to get a PC compatible with the 001 according to the recommendations on this board. He is on a budget but eventually he may get an 001. The price of a "cheaper" Delta 10/10 leads me to tell him to just save up a couple more months for a 001 (w/ PTLE!) but we want to move ahead quickly Ideas? Thanks!!

I haven't tested this but if your friend had a SB-Audigy with digital inputs, and had him going though a preamp with digital outs like the BassPod Pro or something of that nature, you should get a strong clean signal...

That way, both the sound card and the preamp could be adapted into other setups like with the 001 without wasted hardware during an upgrade.

Just thinkin' outloud,

Cheers

The Echo Mia is less than $200 and has better converters than the 001 (at least so i'm told).

Or if you can find an AMIII he could run the full blown PTLE for around $200

Here's some info on the Audigy card:
http://www.soundblaster.com/support/...ily=2#faqstart

Which it looks like it would support the digital outs on the Basspod Pro...

Cheers

We were thinking of a SB card because I have a spare one. I had a bad experience with my SB Live (I pulled it completely to stablize my system). With an AMD m/b it might fair better. Thanks!

I see...

I'm currently running the Audigy Platium on a P4, ME machine, however, I have not tried the digital inputs on it, but it does support 24-bit, 96khz...which is pretty impressive for just a little sound card..

Good luck with your endevors..

Cheers

True, Mia is a good value for a second card, but I'll take the Digi convertors any day.
quote:
Originally posted by cubasteve:

Pete,

Have you tried it? (I tried your email address but it doesn't accept emails. Please email me.)

Thanks! RC

What are you basing that on?

I have a Gina24 and an AMIII (only cause i did no planning whatsoever as i stumbled towards my current DAW)

But in a way i lucked out. The Gina replaced their crystal converters with high-end AKM's claiming a dymamic range of 112 in and 115 out. The MIA also uses AKM converters claimin 106 db dynamic range in and out.

I'm basing my comparison to the 001 on info from http://duc. digidesign.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=32&t=005982

quote:
The Digi001 uses a single-bit architecture Crystal DAC and ADC. The Oasys uses AKM's multi-bit DAC architecture. The Digi001 gets about 100dB SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) and dynamic range in and out, the Oasys should measure about 100dB in and 110dB out. Apogee uses our high-end converters, so thier stuff from both dynamic range and SNR is upwards of 112 to 120 dB both in and out. Remember that the dB scale is logarithmic, so a 6dB difference is actually a DOUBLING of performance. So the Oasys has about 2X the signal to noise ratio
on the output as the Digi001, making it much quieter.

This is pretty much all i know on the subject so i could be way off.

Steve
