The main (and only) interface to a computer on an AX64 is Thunderbolt. Without the Thunderbolt interface you could not connect an AX64 to a computer. This is why Thunderbolt is included as standard in the AX64.

It's as simple as that! There is no secret conspiracy involved in this.

The performance of the Thunderbolt interface in an MTRX 2 and in an AX64 is EXACTLY the same because it is the same module. And yes, the Thunderbolt interface in the AX64 is a removable module, but if you removed it, you couldn't connect the AX64 to a computer. So why is it relevant whether you can remove the module or not?
It seems that the TB3 module is not available for MTRX1. Will a future firmware update support it?

No. The cited reason is that the firmware in the MTRX v1 has basically already reached the maximum size that the hardware will allow.

I'm sure there would have been many ways they could have created a 64-channel thunderbolt expansion card that would have been more reminiscent to a HDN/Digilink scenario than relying on DAD's thundercore technology, but the ship has probably sailed given how much more feature packed the newer thundercore interfaces are.

TB3 for MTRX ain't gonna happen. The FGPA in the MTRX1 is so stuffed already that there's no room left for any future expandability, so also no TB3. Never, ever.

Moreover, as opposed to the AX32 which still seems to be a current product, the MTRX v1 all the sudden is an end of life product, so don't expect any future firmware updates for it anymore. Hope DAD/AVID can say something about the support that current MTRX owners still can expect for it, also regarding future DADMan software updates if/when needed when Apple comes with new macOS versions etc.

Hardware always gets 5 year of support from EOL. No need to worry about DADman/firmware. And I doubt DAD are going to even drop it then as they have a unified firmware flasher and DADman is their universal program.
