Default 512 Disk Cache ?

i've been wondering about this a while now.
what are possible problems that would arise from this setting? i know Digi recommends it, but Apple recommends a much higher setting for system performance. i'd like to have a more clear understanding of this. what are some factors for not having it so low? ex. on older Mac's with newer PT set-ups (using RTAS, etc.) should the cache be brought up?
could this affect the dreaded -60xx errors (6027,6031,6045..)?

In the 5.1.1 reference manual it mentions that the 512k cache is to allow for speedier saving and bouncing to disk. I have a lot of problems with my other Mac software (although my ProTools is virtually crash proof). I wonder if the 512k setting that I leave it at permanently is affecting the performance of my other software (internet, etc...) which is consistently crashing.

Having the cache set at 512K hasn't
caused any problems for me, but
having it set higher causes infuriatingly
long save times in Pro Tools. The only
app that seems to have an issue with
the 512K cache is Digital Performer.
When I launch it I get a pretty dire warning
about the cache being set too low, but
DP runs with no trouble.
