Default Good software for quick/easy music (midi) notation

I'm looking for a piece of software to write, arrange and compose songs with.

I will not be using it to produce the actual songs, only to write down the song, so I can here how it will sound, before going to Protools.
I used to use Cakewalk Home Studio 9 with general midi for this, but I don't have the program anymore.
Simple (crappy) midi sounds are fine for what I want to do.

What are some good programs? Are there any free ones?
