Default What to expect from an M1 native Pro Tools

What can we expect, realistically from a version of Pro Tools that runs natively on Apple silicon chips, rather than Rosetta 2?
Any guesses?

Perhaps a smoother GUI, more track plugin count..? Again, I've no idea, hence my curiosity.

Cheers!

- No more graphic issues.
- stable as a rock (lately is getting there)
- use of all cores (even if some are low performance cores it's clear that performance is affected)
- ping ADC for inserts
- stereo inserts not just in pairs.
- hoping that they don't mess the audio engine
- hoping they don't mess GUI, but unfortunately they will.

They are more for sure but for now...

When do we think this M1 with the Silicon chip is going to happen? Or has it already happened and I missed it?

Hey Emi, thank you for the reply.
Actually using all 8 cores would be awesome.

Insert ping is something I've longed for. Logic has had it for ages.
And yes, they will mess the GUI

Oh and I'm assuming the video engine will become available again.

Last time it was June 6, 2005 when Apple announced transition from PPC Architecture to Intel. While PT 7.3 (released May 12th, 2006) was already Universal Binary, that (and most plugins) were very buggy. I remember that like yesterday as I was in the Beta Team at that time. First really workable version was PT 7.4.2 which was released on June 20th, 2008.

So that is kind of a timeframe what to expect. First native build may be a disappointment, and a starting point for a long wait to get plugins updated.

Not quite. November last year was when the first M1 Macs came out.

Still a while though. Orville probably doesn’t follow Mac/tech news very closely.

Correct, I don't follow Mac news too closely, but I'm trying to get up to speed because I need to get a new computer. i'm on a 2013 iMac and I'd like to update to a current model but am hoping to avoid endless headaches with Protools and plugins when I do so.

any advice on that? Should I go ahead and get the current iMac (I want to stick with iMac) or should I limp it along awhile longer until everything shakes out?

Advice? On last transition most people who bought the last PPC model were very happy to buy a proper one in 2009

This essay from Mark Wherry sheds some light on some things, and asks some good questions. Not an answer, but worth considering as we look at the future.

Ignore the clickbait headline
