Blackmagic used to have a portable usb3 SDI/HDMI out with ref input, called the "Ultrastudio SDI"

Not for sale anymore but maybe available second hand.

Yeah they still make it (well, not quite as mini). It's called "UltraStudio HD Mini" now. TB3 and more or less same features. (HD only though but half the price of the AJA)

I have the thunderbolt version of that, it’s called the UltraStudio Express, and I can confirm it doesn’t work on a Mac studio ultra 🙃
Don’t you just hate forced deprecation? Like another person said, all we want is a ref input video playback box, nothing else

Yeah all the older TB mini monitors also don't work on the newer OSes/machines anymore...

Just as a follow-up to my original question.

I received my new BlackMagic UltraStudio 4K Mini today. Plugged it up and feeding it with 1080p24fps Video Ref and simply banged in the most recent BM desktop video driver and it all goes fine. Sync HD clocking to Video Ref 1080p 24fps.

I tested the offset with my Sync-One2 box and a ProRes 24FPS test movie and got a very tight offset, with very little span or wobble. My TV has about a frame of delay in game mode with all image processing switched off, so a simple 4 qtr frame offset gives me close to zero delay.

Happy camper here.

In the market.

And don't need 4K at the moment.

Anyone having success with UltraStudio HD Mini? Does it successfully genlock?

I've used both the UltraStudio HD Mini as well as the Aja io4k (not the plus version) combined with an Aja Gen 10 and a Sync HD (grey faceplate version) they both work great on a Mac Studio running PT and Ventura and provide frame edge sync.

The only caveat with the UltraStudio HD mini as you mentioned is you can't go above HD with it, so no 4k video outputs. But I'm almost always working in 1080 and I haven't had any problems with it.
