Hi all, experiencing a problem on pro tools 11, when i open pro tools my sample rate automatically from 44.1 to 48kHz. It seems to change right after loading plugins as it noticeable changes on my audio interfaces display whilst pro tools is loading X!pand2... I am using a MOTU ultralite hybrid mk3 as my audio interface, this problem only occurs on pro tools 11, on pro tools 10 this does not happen, this is a big problem as my audio interface does not allow me to change the sample rate through pro tools or whilst pro tools is opened, therefore i have no way of opening 44.1kHz projects... MOTU tech support suggests this is a problem with avid. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Matt |

Hi. I use the same interface with no issues, unless the sound settings in Windows itself conflict with the settings in ProTools. Also, I have found that if you have the Motu set to "stereo pairs", you cannot set it to 24bit in Windows. However in eight channel mode, DVD / Bluray playback software won't see the audio outputs. Other than that, it's a brilliant interface.

Thanks for your input, i have not had this problem in the past with this audio interface, so its something new and not sure what i've done.. I don't want to get started with the amount of problems i have had with different issues with this audio interface.. Though i do believe something in pro tools for some what reason is telling my motu to change sample rates.. And i do believe it should have nothing to do with my windows settings, as i think pro tools by-passes those drivers and uses the audio interfaces own drivers

Actually it doesn't. ProTools does not over ride the windows settings. If you accidentally boot up with an audio CD in the drive, it will set itself to 44.1 16bit.

You need to make sure that Windows is NOT using your PT interface as the default audio device. It has EVERYTHING to do with your Windows settings. Go into Control Panel and designate your on-board audio as the Windows default device, and you should be good to go. |

Actually, with the Motu drivers, you don't have to do that. Windows happily shares the Motu interface, either using independent outputs from ProTools or simultaneously using them, which is only annoying when you get system sounds coming through your main monitoring loudly. In fact it's handy for reviewing mixes back in "real world" circumstances, such as checking an internet clip back. What you DO have to be sure of is that the Windows sound settings, the Motu settings and ProTools settings are the same before trying to fire up ProTools.

Ok.. So is there an option in pro tools that asks you what sample rate you would like when you boot pro tools? Because i cant seem to find that option.. No idea what my windows settings should be to prevent this from happening. I'm using spdif as default playback device at 44.1kHz.
My MOTU Audio console is on 44.1kHz though changes when Pro Tools 11 is opening to 48kHz. If i open Pro Tools 10 it gladly stays on 44.1kHz. So you can say its the audio interface or windows or something but seems clear that something in pro tools 11 is causing this.. |

It's not necessarily one thing causing it, there can just be an unfortunate clash of settings. The flexibility of interfaces like the Motu, vs things like a Mbox or a 003, means that things can clash. The one pain in the rear with using non Avid hardware is that often the settings need juggling, and boot order worked out. In your windows audio settings untick the "allow programs to have exclusive control" box.

I have exactly the same issue.
I have several audio programs on my main DAW including some of the major competitors to Pro Tools. Absolutely none of the other programs change the sample rate like you are describing and I have experienced many times over. So yeah, it's an Avid issue. Every time I point out a bug they deny that they could possibly have any problems. It's aggravating and obvious that Pro Tools IS certainly without any shadow of a doubt changing the sample rate of the MOTU. In my projects this manifests as a pitch shift of about a half step for recorded audio. The MOTU settings, as you mention, cannot be changed while a program is using the MOTU. That means that once Pro Tools decides to play with the MOTU the only thing I can do is restart the whole project and hope it works. I'll keep checking this post for a solution and post one if I find it. Thank you for posing the question. |

I don't know if this will solve your problem, but I often have a similar issue on my windows machine. My problem occors when I try to open a session that's in a different sample rate than the last session I was in-- Pro Tools will say that my interface is set to the wrong rate, even if I've changed it correctly.
The fix for me has been that I need to create a new session at the new sample rate and then close it and open the session I originally wanted to work in. I have a session on my desktop labeled ERASE ME that I just keep overwriting specifically for this purpose. This has been an issue for me in 9, 10 and 11. And interestingly, it was an issue for me with Motu, avid and RME interfaces. |
