Default digidesign databases and external drives

Pro Tools insists on putting a "Digidesign databases" folder on every external drive I plug in to the mac. The real problem is I can't eject the device without closing Pro Tools first. This is getting to be a real hassle, as I need to transfer files regularly using my thumb drive and PT takes forever to boot up. From looking over various forums, this seems to be a common problem, but I've yet to find any common solutions. Anybody got a bright idea?

From the Pro-Tools Workspace Browser window select the drive and unmount it...

When you have very large sessions open it is much faster to quit PT and unmount the drive because the larger the session is the longer it takes PT to unmount the drive. I experience up to 5 minutes to mount/unmount a drive when I have a large session open.

There should be some kind of file or descriptor in the drive that when PT sees it, it stops indexing the drive and releases it to unmounting. It's annoying to always have to unmount pendrives from ProTools.
