It will be tough to avoid being sued by thousands of hardware owners who's only future option may be software subscription to use one's own hardware.

Again, I'm no lawyer but the more they delay the future of HD what else can we do but speculate?
I may be wrong but you buy the license to use the software that is owned by a company, you do not own said software, only the right to use it legally.

That would be correct. However these things are getting grayer and grayer by the day.

Here is one problem with the subscription model. Marvel has a whole security detail before working in a facility.
No systems are allowed on the internet. Security Cams, bolted to foundation safes, ect.

So your on a subscription. There is no word yet on where that subscription license lives. I believe those are going to be cloud based.
Once again, AVID has been very unclear about that.

1) well no internet on the systems per marvel. So cloud license a no go.
2) if it is a "monthly" ilok deposit. Let say something went wrong and there was no deposit.
That's downtime AVID isn't paying for.
3) internet goes down and you can't get either license. Could be a number ofd reasons. Local upgrades, router went south ect.

There are very hard deadlines in post and music. So what then? Is AVID going to cover the downtime, overtime ect?
When a client is paying thousands or more a day, up and running is number one. Can't control AVID's servers, ilok or local providers in all those locations.

What happens if the deadline is missed? How many millions that would cost.

I can certainly see some lawsuits in those cases against AVID.

I have heard nothing that would suggest licenses are going away from iLok

Waves, Plugin Alliance, FabFilter and a few DAWs are already there. Do you know the reasoning behind companies leaving iLok for licensing?

I meant for the subscription based model, not perpetual.

I've heard from several people outside of here that the subscription is going to be cloud based, not local.
Perpetual will only be local.

AVID hasn't been clear on the subscription license, and some other information about a lot of programming going into 12 to deal with the new license structure.
If there is a new license structure, that leads me to believe that subscription is cloud based only.

So if you aren't connected, you aren't working.

Money? Back in the day, Waves had a real reason because it began to look like Mercury licenses wouldn't fit into one key, but iLok2 fixed that.

With some sadness, I've already purchased a copy of Nuendo and will endeavor to learn it over the next year. Since I'm doing more game sound these days, it might be the wisest path forward. Oh well.

If there was an AVID loss counter, like the national debt, that we could just watch.

Its early and people are deboarding the Titanic before it sailed!

HDX and S6, that's some numbers there.

Pretty sad to hear so many real world stories of folks abandoning Avid. They can never say they weren't warned. And even in the unlikely event that they do take notice, already its at the stage where moving the goalposts will cause them grief - decisions are being made every day that are effectively irreversible.

As far as copy protection goes, I'd be surprised if an alternative to iLok (possibly mandatory for rental) doesn't appear for the simple reason that this is how Media Composer is, and everything in PT now seems to be just copying that model, regardless of whether or not that's appropriate.

Speaking of which, with regard to the legalities, hasn't this already been through the video mill? How is the video hardware now moving into subscription different to audio hardware?
