I have only used this technique for de-essing and low end (pop) control. But I guess you could use this for any (problem) frequency.
you set up an aux send. Then on your return you place an EQ. With this EQ you emphasise your problem frequency by boosting the h*ll out of it (usually with a very narrow band). It also helps to filter away the "good" frequencies. Now you route this return to any bus available. (or on an analog desk to another pre-fader send...and close the fader off course) Now on your vocal channel you place a compressor and activate the side chain to the specific bus you routed your EqAux channe to. Now the compressor will only respond to those nasty frequencies you emphasized. I hope this helps Maybe you knew all this already, but others looking at this thread might find it to be helpfull. you could also use this routing scheme to go to another send and use for instance a chorus before you go to your reverb. This will sometimes help to give a sound (vocal) more space in the mix. |

Channel Strip makes it really easy to use.
Both of their compressor as well as the gate have a side chain activation. Compressor side chain works good for de-essing but if you want to experiment go right ahead. Some interesting things can come out.
