Does anyone have experience with the Elgato drivers and software. My specific question is , can the Steamdeck + dials be assigned to faders in ProTools? the new one has 4 dials and I wanna assign them to busses in my template, so I can adjust DME on the fly....

Greetings,
While the Stream Deck products are insanely useful and recommended - with or without SoundFlow, that particular use case is not going to work. Most people augment their Stream Deck device with some kind of dedicated Network or MIDI based surface which includes at least a single fader. best, Jeff |

I dont mix in that room, its just for editing, I like the Apogee interface i have but would love to have a mute/level control on the DME busses, just for monitoring checks etc...

It's not a physical control but you can do it with Avid Control on a tablet. Either from the Mixer page or you can do just the mutes from the Tracks page.

There is a MIDI plugin for the Stream Deck which can emulate an MCU but not HUI. It looks pretty programmable though so maybe not impossible.
Then there is Soundflow... So it could work but not plug and play.

I was away from Pro Tools for about a year due to production but I realized nothing changed in terms of how bad Avid is at supporting new interfaces and technology. There are complete Elgato profiles for all the other DAWs except Pro Tools, because it's probably technologically the worst DAW to work with, running still the oldest core engine with the least flexibility for customization and Avid puts 0 effort into working with these devs. You can find it here: https://soundflow.org/store/pkg/hui-control |

Why do you think Avid is responsible for supporting Elgato products? It’s not their product.
Avid has its own protocol called Eucon which they support that has deep integration and hardware solutions. HUI is a now ancient and limited protocol. It is the least technologically forward system today so a bizarre metric to judge any DAW on. Its only saving grace is it is so basic any one can implement it but it has no deep integration. (And if you’ve forgotten, HUI and MCU were created by Digidesign/Avid in partnership with Mackie. So the DAW you are saying is behind created the thing everyone else uses)

We're now in the age where producing, mixing and mastering has blurred lines and is lot's of times done at the same time by one person, which requires lots of editing on the side and that's why people appreciate a small, more versatile interface with a combination of buttons, touch screen and knobs that they can put aside and still control all their actions with, which is why things such as Elgato and Loupdeck are so popular. Disregarding them entirely because they have their own controllers is really backwards. It's not like they have their own controllers that work like that, they don't and whatever controllers they have lack the required customization, it's based on an old 80s console workflow design that's outdated for years now. We're paying 500 bucks for a yearly updated support for the newest version and whatever we're getting isn't worth the money. By their latest release, I think I've gotten all the features I need from a Dolby Atmos integrated renderer in Pro Tools and am better off spending the next 500, which I'd have to pay by the end of this year, on Cubase or Logic Pro to actually have a proper integration with new modern DAW controllers. To be frank, all the times I've held on was mostly due to my loyalty and hope in the company to do better but that's running really low now, for the money that I spend yearly on the updates, it's not even half enough what they are doing. They probably have less than a handful of programmers actually working on updates for the DAW and 250 people in marketing. |
