Thumbs up My issues with Pro Tools 9 and Windows 7/64bit

My experience with Pro Tools and Windows 7/64bit was a little shaky at first but once I figured out a few things, Pro Tools 9 now runs fine. I never had any real issues with Pro Tools 7.0 or 8.0 on Windows XP Pro. But when I upgraded to Pro Tools 9, I had to install Windows 7. I installed the 32 bit version for fear that my third party plug-ins (too many to list right now) wouldn't work. I have 8Gigs of memory installed though I knew that Win 7/32 bit would only recognize 4Gigs. All was good in PT9 until I started running out of memory and getting all sorts of errors that I didn't get with previous versions of PT. I had built the computer knowing that one day I'd be moving up to 64bits so I threw caution to the wind and installed the 64bit version of Windows 7. As soon as I got Pro Tools 9 installed I started experiencing grief. Failure to launch, access errors, DAE errors, plug-in errors, GUI crashes etc. Then I remembered that when I had one particular issue running Pro Tools 9 on the 32bit version of Windows 7, Tech support told me to run PT9 as administrator. So, soon as I ran PT9 as administrator on the 64bit version all of the grief went away and everything including fxpansions vst wrapper and all of my 3rd party plug-ins work very smoothly now. I realized that most of my grief with Pro Tools 9 had come from lack of access to my memory and not running PT9 as administrator. Anyway all's good for now.

Sweet. So you're not getting clicks and crackles at punch points, or any other common weirdness?

Nope, just a steady work-flow. The thing is, I've been trying to crash it by using a lot of NI power hungry Soft Synths. Also I'm able to run BFD2 in 24 bit mode without sacrificing kit pieces. I am finally pleased.
Glad Avid made the move.

Holy cow. This is big.

The main difference I see between your system and mine is Gigabyte mobo instead of ASUS. I wonder if that could be the source of our issues?

I'll go one further. I have other apps like SONAR, Cubase, Nuendo, Sound Forge etc. and I never start out doing any of the PT optimizations before or after installing PT. I figure if I don't get any problems with those other apps, I shouldn't get any with PT and I refuse to prioritize my computer for just one application. I only check the optimizations if I run into serious issues. So far, I haven't run into any. Also, I've been using Gigabyte Motherboards for years without any problems.

Just installed Windows 7 Ultimate and PT9 on a new caviar Black. I have an Asus P6T mobo. So far I have not encountered any problems. If anything, I have seen some real improvement and snapiness on my system.

I am yet to install my third party plugs and instruments so we will see how it all works out.

I have AERO enabled and I don't get any dropouts. As I said earlier, I refuse to make my computer "one app friendly". I was really nervous when switching to Win 7/64bit but it all worked out. I will say this; I installed all my plug-ins first then, my audio and video editing apps like Sound Forge and Vegas. Then I loaded my daws, SONAR, Cubase, Nuendo and even Ableton (though I took Ableton off cause I wasn't feeling it). Finally and nervously I installed PT9 and all hell broke loose. Plug-in errors, no launch etc. Then like I said I ran PT9 as administrator and all was good. Hey, I'm an XP Pro guy and was refusing to get Win 7 and never had Vista so the run as admin was new to me. Anyway hope it works out for everybody.

Unhappy Re: My issues with Pro Tools 9 and Windows 7/64bit

Hi OP and All

please let me know how to run PT9 as administrator?

I have my Win7 64bit installed only with 1 user : Administrator but my PT9 always stop playback and tell me that I'm running CPU power and need to remove some RTAS plugins or increase the CPU usage limit. (-9128)

The session only 20 tracks audio, 10-12 Auxes..I'm running only Waves SSL Chanel Plugins, DVerb and Waves ST Delay, UAD-1 Pultec EQ, UAD-1 1176s (The UAD CPU 72%)

System Usage CPU (RTAS) 5%
DISK 0%

Also crackles and clicks occur when I open/edit Plugins Window/Parameter or I switch between MIX and EDIT.
Also when I randomly fast move the mouse (for testing purpose only).

It never happen before (LE8, M-Powered8, PT8 HD1) in this machine (XP and Hackintosh Leopard Installed before)

My system :

ASUS MB M4A78-E
AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8Ghz
Memory Corsair 4GB (Twin 2x4096-8500C5DF)
Texas Instrument Firewire Card
NVIDIA GeForce 7300SE/7200 GS

M-AUDIO Profire LightBridge

Currently Disabling Network Card

Please Help
