HD Native Thunderbolt headphone port
Is the only difference between the HD Native Thunderbolt interface and the HD Native PCIe card the headphone port?
If I am going to use a pair of the Focusrite HD32R Dante to Protools HD bridge units to get 64 channels of audio from a Yamaha CL5 with two RIO3224D I/O units into Protools; can I use the headphone port on the HDN Thunderbolt interface to cue the individual inputs without having to route a channel of audio back out of Protools onto the Dante network? I.e. by using the HDN Thunderbolt interface, and the HD32Rs, I can get all 64 channels of I/O into Protools? and still be able to monitor or cue inputs without losing one of the available 64 channels of audio that Protools Native is limited to?

Re: HD Native Thunderbolt headphone port
The headphone jack on the thunderbolt box mirrors outputs 1 & 2, so it's not gonna do what you want.

Re: HD Native Thunderbolt headphone port
So basically, even though HD Native allows you to record up to 64 channels at a time; there is no way to monitor any of them if you are recording all 64 at the same time, since you have to be able to route at least one channel back to your audio interface in order to at least cue an input.
So, really HD Native is only 63 or 62 channels of input (assuming that you want to be able to cue an input). My next question then, if there any benefit to getting the Thunderbolt version of the HD Native unit? I'm going to get a Sonnet Echo Thunderbolt chassis for hard drives any way, should I just get the HD Native PCIe card and toss it into the Sonnet chassis? Seems like if the headphone port on the Thunderbolt HD Native interface is not going to be useful to me, then I might as well get the PCIe card, right?

Re: HD Native Thunderbolt headphone port
Well. U can do 64 in and 64 out simultaneously
Maybe I misunderstood what you meant, but it sounded like you wanted to feed 64 channels into protools, route the same 64 back out, and all be able to monitor - in that scenario, you wouldn't have a monitor option If all you are doing is feeding 64 channels INTO pro tools, and not feeding them back out, then yes, you can monitor. And the headphone jack would work for you, as it mirrors 1 and 2 out. (You could have all channels assigned to a master (or other) bus and monitor that, or solo as needed

Re: HD Native Thunderbolt headphone port
As was mentioned, you can do this if you're just using inputs. If for some reason you also need 64 outputs besides monitoring, one solution may be to add an HD Omni and use its hard wired headphone Cue output, which I don't think will count as part of the total outputs.

With HDN you have a maximum connection of two ports - only capable of 64 physical I/O - so you would only have enough connections to make physical connection for your needed 64 I/O... no more connections to route the OMNI Alternatively, you could get a couple Waves DLI's (Cat 5e/6/7 connection). Each one will give you 64 connections. One could handle your 64 I/O to your tracking and return units, and the other could be used for other units, or splits The catch there is that Avid limits third party I/O to 32 I/O... so you'd have to use something like Tracks Live (Free), or Logic or something. Honestly, money wise, I would look at that route - with the Waves DLI's. At $600 each, it's pretty much a no brainer if you ask me.

Re: HD Native Thunderbolt headphone port
Can you use a DLI without a DLS?

Re: HD Native Thunderbolt headphone port
Yes... DLI can run standalone, or with any other soundgrid components.
Same with DLS, IOS, IOX, IOC, etc etc etc. Anything SoundGrid will work on it's own, or with anything else. The DLS is a digilink interface, just like the DLI, but the DLS also has an internal DSP Server

Re: HD Native Thunderbolt headphone port
No, they are SoundGrid interfaces, with Digilink connectivity so you can use anything that connects digilink, and interface it to SoundGrid.
Waves SoundGrid is pretty badass. It's not just an interface, it's an entire networked infrastructure for audio, including DSP - studio, live, broadcast, etc. Very very cool... Unlike Dante, soundgrid will communicate clock sync back and forth across multiple devices... Dante has issues there. Third parties are supporting the platform now as well - DiGiCo, CADAC, Crest, Apogee, Hear Technologies, Burl, support for Avid/Digi digilink I/O's, with many more coming. Also, Plugin Alliance and FLUX have released plugins compatible with SoundGrid DSP - more coming there as well. --- JCBigler.... I would strongly consider SoundGrid. Another thing that comes to mind is the DiGiCo Orange Box: http://www.digico.biz/docs/products/Orange_Box.shtml You could get the box, a Dante card, and a Waves SoundGrid card, and bridge the two. I think the pricepoint on that setup would be $1800-2200. Slick. And of course, with the card modules, you could get other cards for other needs as they arise... such as MADI, etc. Maybe a good option.
