Default Advise Please: Using Animal Sounds As Human Speech

Hi All,

I have been asked to treat on a film, where I need to replace human speech with animal sounds. The viewer needs to believe the humans are making these sounds so lip sync is crucial. We are also trying to keep the animal sounds as natural as possible with minimal processing.

My team has tried several techniques, non of which are yielding great results at the moment. I would really appreciate any advice from someone who has attempted this or done something similar in the past.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

You are not saying too much, but from what I read into it, and if it is more than a few scenes, and if you are looking for something that should be realistic you may need voice talent. Have done some things along those lines in the past. Perhaps you can look for voice talent that can do animalistic ADR in your neighbourhood?
If you manage to get some good performances, then treat that subtly and augment with some real animal sounds. If you can't find the talent, get a mic out and see if you or your team have a wolf within yourselves? We are related you know
Good luck.

I've got Dehumaniser 1 Extended Pro personally which is a standalone application. Dehumaniser II works as a plugin within PT. Give it a try. It does exactly what you describe that you need done.

Thanks all for the assistance...

We are trying some morph plugs, but so far its leaving the audio a little artificial for my taste. Will definitely look into Zynaptic and Dehumanizer, thanks for those recommendations.

PatrickFaith, I think there is definitely milage in your approach which will keep the animal sounds as natural as possible. Since the film has not been shot yet this is something that i can discuss with the director. ( Provided the actors are ok barking on set.. :) )

ReVoice Pro has been great to tighten sync and impart pitch information.

Thanks again for the advice

Make sure you record in the highest sample rates possible ideally 192kHz. This will give you more scope with any signal processing especially time compression/expansion. I'd be leaning toward voice acting to as a base sound.
