This sounds like a signal routing bug in Pro Tools. Everything should keep working while still in the mono domain? It's not clear to me at which stage the track becomes stereo, i.e. it should only become stereo after the stereo plugin and stay in the mono domain before. Apparently this is not working correctly, hence the confusion.

Yes it seems to be a bug. Can't see why this would happen with a mono send to a mono compressor (the stereo plug was the last in the chain) but i'm happy it got resolved. It was driving me nuts. Thanks for taking the time to post.
