Using Clippers instead of Limiters! Thoughts
I did a lot of research on how to make things loud, and since I started to use more Clippers instead of Limiters, my results got much better. I tried a lot of clippers such as T-Rex, K-Clip, and Vladislav Goncharov Mastering Suite. Still, I'm just using the Waves Infected Mushroom Pusher, which sounds really great and clean. So you can do a lot of different mastering processes on it, such as compression, limiting, Clipping, EQ, Enhancer, and Stereo Image.

Re: Using Clippers instead of Limiters! Thoughts
Hmmm, I am sure there will be lots of opinions, so here is mine Since I like things to sound clean(even if they are not), I shy away from any clipping or saturation on the master. I used to use Slate VTM, but have since stopped(I still use that on drums and bass a lot). I will often use saturation on drums(Slate Distressor or Soundtoys Decapitator). I will sometimes use distortion to get a lead vocal to sit right(sometimes, volume is not the solution). Otherwise, I shy away.

Re: Using Clippers instead of Limiters! Thoughts
Are you doing your own mastering? If so, be careful because the most important 2 things a mastering engineer brings are; 1-premium monitoring, and 2-a fresh set of ears. As for making things loud, what is the intended market? If its downloads or streaming, most of the biggies(like Spotify and iTunes) have strict volume limits, so a super-loud mix will get turned down, and the results might not work for the intended final sound. This is a complicated subject and I am no expert, but one thing I do know; louder is not always better

A CLIPPER is a Dynamics soft clipping plugin Massey gives a brief explanation in the page I liked below, it is used as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, a limiter and or compressor
If your on Mac OS then the Massey MGM (Massey Golden Master) is what I am using now. You can download a free version to try. His L2007 (brick wall look ahead) Limiter is also excellent but now I use the MGM much more often . https://www.masseyplugins.com/plugin/goldenmaster

I was hoping for more of a definition of it, what exactly happens in it. I've owned L2007 almost since it came out, and I have all his plugins installed; you know the trials work, they just don't save, but you can use them and print. So I guess I'll insert Golden Master and see what it does.

Re: Using Clippers instead of Limiters! Thoughts
Good points, guys! My opinion is:
In 90% of the cases, the Clipper sounds better than the limiter, even when you don't need to push the volume too much. You will probably choose the Clipper if you compare the same threshold using a limiter. Cheers, Lou |

Re: Using Clippers instead of Limiters! Thoughts
Beware that a clipper can sound dreadful with lossy encoding/streaming.
