Default Concerns moving from PTLe8 XP to PT10 Win7

Hi everyone! I'm ready to jump to PT10 and Windows 7 (currently PTLe 8 and XP). I've been reading alot so that the process is as painless as possible, although I know I will have to tweak stuff here and there to have it running smooth.

I still have some doubts which haven't been completely addressed in other threads, forums, sites, etc or at least I haven't found them:

1. Should I install the 32 or 64 bit version of Win7? If 64, will this require me to update all hardware drivers? Is 64 a big advantage over 32 when using PT10? Has anyone done the same that I'm planning to do and if so, has it been smooth?
2. Is my motherboard qualified for 64 bit (Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R)? Where can I find out?

Any other recommendations are welcome!

I know that I will have to reformat the drive and reinstall all software since I'm going from XP to 7.

1. There is no disadvantage to going with the 64bit flavor of W7. Perhaps a future version of PT will be 64 bit. :) You will need to upgrade some drivers, but this is very easy.

2. Your motherboard should handle W7 64-bit perfectly.

Cheers.

Yes indeed. The motherboard will work fine. We can also assume you have an i7 cpu(9xx socket 1366)? With that setup. you should run triple channel RAM(if you are not already). That means 3 sticks of matched RAM. Your wisest move here is to remove your C: drive and leave it with XP and PT8, just as it was. Pop in a new blank drive and install Wndows 7(64 bit is my choice as well). Install the 64 bit version of iTunes, and the iLok software. The perform all the system tweaks. Now would be a good time to save a drive image. While Win7 can do this, I much prefer to use Acronis True Image. Saving an image now will allow you to restore a totally crapped out rig and have a lot of work all done. After you install PT10, run a test session or 2, and do a Dverb2 test to benchmark the setup. If it turns good numbers(like over 300), then save another drive image. Then install the rest of your software and plugins. Once the whole shebang tests out solid, save a 3rd image. Then, after a few months of smooth sailing(when you are SURE you don't need to revisit the old XP/PT8 setup, use Acronis again and clone your Windows 7/PT10 system drive to the old drive. Now you have a fully loaded backup drive(trust me, someday you will thank me for the Acronis tip)

Thanks for the information, albee! Yes, it's a i7 CPU and I have 3 sticks of Ram (total 6GB, IIRC).

Why do I need to install iTunes?

Just to makes sure, system tweaks go before installing PT10?

I have digi003 and graphic card drivers downloaded and ready to use when Win7 is installed. What other hardware/software drivers will I need to upgrade? Will Win7 upgrade them automatically after installation?

You need QuickTime. Installing iTunes should also install QuickTime. Installing iTunes will give you a way to burn CD's if you don't have another way.

Hope this helps,
Greg
