Expanding stereo score to 5.1!
I have a problem, I have to do a program in 5.1, but the score I got was only stereo(no vocals). Does anyone know a good way to expand my stereo score, without having to much to worry about phase cancelations when downmixed again to mono or stereo.

Re: Expanding stereo score to 5.1!
Hi bjorn,
there are multiple ways to do this. The simple ways are to use M 6000 (unwrap) or 960 (upmix). You could also use a surround decoder. If you don´t have one of these gears you could try to make a copy of the stereofile and route this with delay to ls/rs. From linear acoustic comes an outboard gear that upmixes to 5.1 within to be compatble with stereo downmix. my 2 cents regards Jochen |

Re: Expanding stereo score to 5.1!
Since this is a Pro Tools forum, how about a plug-in that does what you want? I've been using the hardware version of this for a couple of years and it works great. Now here comes the plug-in!

Re: Expanding stereo score to 5.1!
I work more for broadcast and home playback and so I am ALWAYS very concerned about how the music will downmix after being "up'd". For that reason I don't like to do it unless I've got the time to check everything in different scenarios. It is usually too time consuming to do under our usual mix restraints and too dangerous not to check thoroughly. I specify surround up front. My thinking is that if the composers or clients choose to ignore my request then I should not meddle with their decision!
I always use TC6000 for this job and automate the parameters when required (MIDI). It gives me more flexibility than a standard matrix decoder.

I have the Waves 360 Bundle too and in my opinion most of the plug-ins aren't worth the money. The Waves plug-ins add reverb and delays to a signal to simulate a space. The Extract function in the SRS plug-in extracts ambience information from the signal and spreads the sound. The better the source material the better the result. My 2 cents... Re: Expanding stereo score to 5.1!
I have had the best luck with surround tools for this purpose. It downmixes great, and when paired with a subharmonic synth to fill in a touch of LFE it is outstanding. Never used the TC or 960 for this, and I am sure it does it well, but this is a great solution if you do not have these boxes. As far as circle surround, I hope it works better this time around because the last version sounded horrible to my ears.

Hi all,
Cycling '74 just released "UpMix". Looks nice, but haven't tested yet. Includes other nice Surround tools. Worth checking out at Cycling 74 Carles |
