Default OK To Update General Mac Apps?

I installed Pro Tools MP on my IMac a few months ago and am still at the novice level.
I seem to recall being instructed not to download updates for my system until Pro Tools first releases updated plug-ins and/or other operational-related updates that are compatible with the system updates.
That being said: Is it OK for me to download updates for ITunes and other non-operating system apps as they are offered without putting my Pro Tools performance at risk?
Any advice or instructions that anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
