Default Updating OS X

Hepp.

I've downloaded Panther 10.3.8 and were about to install it, but then this creepy feeling stopped me. So I ask you : Can I just disconnect my FW drives and then go for it, or are there other considerations???

Thanks.

I just went for it. But then again, I like to take risks!!

Not sure why you'd need to disconnect your FW drive though. I left mine hooked up and as far as I can tell, nothing happened to it.

So far, all is well with 10.3.8 and 6.7 cs8. Although I haven't used any soft synths yet. I'm really digging the PT upgrade. Tons of new features. Useful ones!!! I haven't had a crash yet and I've been on it for 3 days now. That's really good, considering I'd have at least one crash a day with 6.4.

For a any OS X update - I’d suggest these 5 steps:

1 Unplug FW drives

2 Run a disc utility (I like Disc Warrior)

3 Repair permissions

4 Install update

5 Repair permissions

Thanks, bassmac.

I'll try your "5-step" suggestion.

May I suggest making a Carbon Copy Clone of your boot drive first, then you can get back to your starting point if it all goes ugly.

How do I do that? Is there any additional software needed?

You can make a bootable clone of your drive on an external Firewire Drive or the like. I think it is a good idea to have a clone of your working boot drive anyway so that you can restore a working image if you have any software problems.

CCC works well for reverting back to your last OS.

FYI: there were reports of the 10.3.7 update erasing FW drives. (that’s why I unplug!)

Generally speaking... updating an already “healthy” system is good insurance.
