Default help with new computer

hey guys, I need your help...

I just put together a pro tools computer for a client.

it is an AMD xp3000 on a Asus A7V8X-X motherboard. 512mb 333mHz ram
30gig maxtor system drive
60 gig ibm audio drive.

every once in a while, i get a "primary drive failure" warning. the first time it happened, I replaced the cable, and the problem went away. but... it just happened again.

is it just a brand new drive gone bad? or has anyone heard of a similar problem?

thanks for any and all suggestions.

-Joshua

Hey Joshua,
Which drive are you having problems with? Is it happening only in PTLE? How do you have the drives configured with the motherboard?

I had that happening too. I tossed out the Maxtor, and got myself a Western Digital Caviar drive, and use the IBM as sys and the WD as audiodrive now...

I still have the maxtor drive, and it never really failed me. But now its gone i notice it is one noisy drive when in action.

It happens. I bought two, yes two, Western Digital Caviar drives from two different stores and both had to be sent back to WD to be refurbished just a week after using them. I moved to Maxtor after that and haven't had a problem since.

Just to keep the WD/Maxtor firestorm going, I really don't hear any more noise from my Maxtor drives then I did with my WD.

I have a 200gig WD drive and an 80gig that I will trade someone for an 80gig Maxtor and a box of Krispy Kremes.

Just stick with the Hitachi/IBM 8MB cache drives and avoid all the problems.

Iv'e heard of this problem before with Maxtors, something to do with the pin setting.Check the FAQ on the Maxtor site, and double check the pin settings.
