What's better... BLA 002R Mod Pres or DigiMax FS Pres via Lightpipe?

I remember speaking with someone at BLA and they said that the DigiMax FS is a great combo with the modded 002R, but I forgot what he said the reason was... I'm guessing it was due to the upgraded conversion and components, but the thing I'm mainly curious about is how the DigiMax FS pres stack up against the BLA modded pres.

I also have a Eureka, which I'm guessing is the best pre I have out of the whole lot.. does that sound about right?

First of all I'm not sold on the Bla mod, everything is relative. Secondly, I wouldn't perform a rather expensive mod on a piece of gear that is already on its way out (002) when you could keep an external unit around with you. And thirdly, better mics, micing techniques, and the use of compressors could give you a much more professional sound.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion.

Nonetheless, I completely agree with the "thirdly" you mentioned as that is pretty common knowledge that there are many variables that can improve the end resulting mix. Good technique with bad gear can result in better mixes more often than bad technique with good gear can.

But back on point, I'm asking a specific question about gear and not technique.. just making that clear.

I feel the same way and for most of the same reasons as RQ above, the 002 may has it's supported days numbered at this point and investing heavily in it might prove disappointing. This is not a reelection on the quality of the mod as many have been very satisfied with it.

For my situation, the bottleneck was (and still is by far) the hardware. Unless the next PT (that may no longer support the 002) has some heavy hitting new features that would specifically benefit me, I wouldn't care too much about staying on 8. I'm betting they'll still support 002s for at least 1 more major version though. It's one thing to stop supporting a flavor of the Mbox, but the digis are in another playing field investment-wise. (at least to the consumer)

After heavily weighing the decision, I still decided to go with the mod in hopes to improve my signal chain and after receiving it, I'm definitely overjoyed.
