Default how much does an external clock makes a diffarence on 002r conversion ?

i am using an external clock from an ONYX 800R thru ADAT to my 002R.

it sounds better then the 002's internal clock but can anybody tell me is it like using a diffarent converter or do i have to buy a standalone hi end converter to realy make a diffarence ?

what i am asking is : does clocking a converter (any converter) from an external source makes a big audiable change ?

and what do you guys think of the ONYX 800R conversion & clock ?

This is the subject of much debate recently. Here's my take on the current wisdom:

Clocking internally is usually the best route, since the circuits that detect the clock signal from outside sources (via ADAT or BNC) are less than ideal. On prosumer-grade products, improving the internal clock is preferable to clocking externally (but, from my own experience, this is splitting hairs).

Some boutique-grade devices do possess excellent detection circuitry, but they tend to have excellent internal clocks as well, and so do not obviously benefit from external clocking. But it is mostly agreed that they suffer no "penalty".

I suggest the Black Lion mod for your 002R, or an Apogee Rosetta 800 (connected via ADAT). Both sound dramatically better than the stock 002R. I haven't owned an Onyx, so I can't comment.
