Default Dell Inspiron 8200 Users - hjorte - 1394 Question

I was wondering if you guys are using the on-board firewire port or if you are using a PCMCIA/Carbus firewire card? I am currently using the on-board firewire port with my 002R and it seems to work fine, but I can only record with a hardware buffer of 256 (anything less and i get erros telling me to increase the buffer size). Would adding an approved firewire card to my pcmcia slot allow me to track with a smaller buffer size? What are you experiences with this?

Thanks!
Paul

Regarding shared IRQ:
Unfortunately, many subsystems in the 8200 are fighting for the rights to use IRQ11. Both the Cardbus and on-board Firewire ports are using IRQ11, as are the graphics card and the USB host controller. So, no real performance difference in this regard. Just for your info.

Regarding bus saturation:
But looking at streaming of data, i think there's a technical difference between Cardbus and the on-board Firewire. The on-board Firewire bus in the 8200 could very well become saturated during heavy use and result in the problems you are experiencing. Cardbus, on the other hand, are using bus mastering techniques to maintain proper streaming performance - much more comparable to a normal tower workstation. So, using a Cardbus Firewire interface might be the solution for you.

The above is pure speculation. I have no real life experience using the Cardbus nor the on-board Firewire interface when running Pro Tools.

Paul, first things first: Are you running a top tuned (tweaked) Windows to make it easier for Pro Tools? Have you disabled ALL hardware interfaces that you can do without? Wireless, LAN, USB, 1394 Net Adapter....? Stopped all services not necessary? And so forth...

Henrik - Hi and thanks for the reply!

I am running a tweaked Windows system (I have done most of the recommendations from musicxp.net). Also, I have disabled all the unnecessary hardware devices on my computer to help free up IRQ11. I have stopped all unecessary background services (I think i have like 15 services running in the background).

What buffer size are you able to record at with your 8200? What type of score do you get on the DaveC test?

Can't remember and i haven't got my Mbox with me at the moment to check. It's set to default. Never had to change it... yet.

31/28 if i recall correctly. I haven't tried messing with buffer sizes to tweak that DaveC test. I am using two hard disks inside the 8200. One 7200rpm in the normal bay and a 5400rpm in the media bay. Dual WinXP boot. Works fine.
