You can still have the thunderbolt cable hooked up to your computer though, even in HDX mode. This gives you access to their Rednet Control software, which is way more intuitive and easier to use than DADMAN. From there, you can change configurations, calibrations, route things, and remote control the 2 built in preamps, which are very good and similar to the clean-but-not sterile sound of the Omni preamps.
I am surprised you think the Studio sounds worse than the Focusrite converters.
I've had them side by side too (and still own the X2P and AM2 devices for headphone feeds) and the DAD converters slay.

On DADman- yes it is complex but it is a lot more capable, esp when you get into the full fat MTRX II/MTRX/DAD AX64/32 side of things.

I reviewed the Focusrite R1 which is an excellent device and worth the price of entry.

HDX and Thunderbolt not working simultaneously in the Focusrite stuff, with the hardware needing to reset between switching modes is a real kill-joy.
Agree with everything here.

One advantage with the Red16 Line though when you switch modes you don't need to repatch anything.

One complexity with the DADman universe is it requires either some patch alteration when you switch between Thunderbolt and HDX when using analogue outboard.
Or you can use a multi channel monitor .
The number of people needing analogue inserts across Thunderbolt and HDX though is probably quite low.

Did you actually compare the MTRX Studio, or just the MTRX? From what I've been able to glean, the Studio's conversion is not at all the same as the MTRX (version I or II).

You technically don't need to repatch anything with DADman either. Their design as an 'audio router' rather than an audio interface means whole broadcast trucks/control rooms/etc can be rematched just by loading a different DADman profile.

I know a lot of engineers who get frustrated by the added applications in newer HD interfaces. Surely there are still some “dumber” boxes out there that function like the older Avid HD stuff? Lynx Aurora N maybe?

Yes, you're right, it is just loading up a different profile.

Yes I've got colleagues with the MTRX Studio.
They aren't exactly the same converters but they are still excellent.

Own a 8 Line and 16 Line (studio and mobile rig). Absolutely love the converters. The Rednet Control software is great, and very very flexible.

Never have used the MTRX but I'm a huge fan of the 8/16 Line top to bottom. Their support is also amazing - had lighting fry a DANTE port (I think) while under warranty and I had a new unit in days.
