Default Re: dual monitor - mix and edit on separate windows

I'm trying to get back up to speed in Pro Tools after many years working in other DAWs and ran into this small but very irritating issue.

Like the OP I've been searching the internet for hours. I've tried everything suggested in this thread (and several others) to get PT to remember where I put my Mix and Edit windows on my multi display setup, but when I launch the app, but no matter what, they end up on top of one another on one display (the one with Apple menu etc). Weirdly, plugin windows and the video show up where I left them, but not the Mix window - which I'd like on the left display. Any Window Configurations only remember the Mix window's placement until I quit PT.

Is there anything else I can try? Could this be a corrupted preference? It's been a year since anyone in this thread has posted to it, so maybe there's a new pref or something I don't know about.

This might have something to do with whether you have Displays have separate Spaces pref set in Mac OS. Spaces wreaked havoc for keeping the edit and mix window static.

So on my studio system (Intel iMac) PT Ultimate 2024.10.1 on Mac OS Sequoia 15.1.1
The only thing that causes PT to stick both the mix and edit window on the same display is (as stated earlier in this thread) :

IF while the session is open I hit the little green button and PT goes into Full Screen on either display, or both, and then save....... When I re-open that session PT will have taken itself out of full screen, (to almost full screen), BUT put both mix and edit on one display

BUT If I then fix it and move one window to other display so Mix on one and Edit on the other Then re-size to almost full screen and save.... PT will then open with the Mix on one, and the Edit one the other.

I do not use any Window configurations at all just re-size to almost full screen and save

Do not know if being on Apple silicon presents any additional issues or not.... I do have and M1 laptop but do not have it connected to an additional display

Thanks! I tried the procedure you suggest, and some variations, but my Mix and Edit windows still remain on top of one another whenever I start. I even tried moving the Menu Bar to the left display (although I prefer it on the right) thinking it might affect this, but it did not.

Humm hard to know if is a PT issue or a Mac issue

So this may not have anything to do with as one would (assume) it is something in the Mac OS and displays ,,, but maybe not ?
Have you tried trashing your PT preferences ?

Also again may have nothing to do with but I am not quite clear on your actual system details

14-inch MBP M1 Max (2021), 13.6.x, 64GB RAM, UAD Quad Tb Satellite, 4 displays ::: Lynx Aurora (n) USB

Does the 13.6.x mean you are still on Ventura 13.6 ? and are you still using UAD (i wonder if that is causing a problem?) ? and it says 4 displays so is that the MBP plus 4 more displays ??? Also what PT version are you on ?

Thanks for your interest in helping me! Other DAWs and apps (including DP, Logic) have always remembered window placements, so I assumed it was a PT issue - also existence of this thread is an indication of a PT issue. However, I'm open to trying anything. A combo of my Mac prefs and something in PT makes sense too.

A corrupted PT pref sounds like a good place to start, but the internet is very unclear as to what I should trash. Could you suggest where and which prefs I might trash?

Re my system. I'm on 13.8.2. Still using the UAD (i tried disabling just now. no effect on this). I'm running 3 displays, plus the MBP screen currently. I have used the MBP in clamshell mode and run 4 externals in the past, but not at the moment. I just updated to PT Studio 24.10.1.204 from the last 23.whatever trying to fix this issue.

I'm in the middle of a few projects and apart from this issue my system is as solid as it's ever been, so I'm reluctant to to update my OS. Plus the issue seems to crop up for users on multiple OSs

Thanks again!

For trashing prefs, you are best to use this utility, as linked from this forum.

https://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=340741

https://petegates.com/pgptprefs.html

You can use it to make a backup of your existing prefs files and trash all or part of your prefs.

For the last year or so, window placement of the mix and edit windows has been all over the place, so personally I don't think you're going to find a fix for this.

Dominic

Wow! That is an amazing utility! Thank you so much. It didn't fix this issue unfortunately, but I can see it will come in very handy.

Your comment that the mix and edit window placement is messed up for many users is actually helpful. It really isn't that big of a deal to move the Edit window over whenever I start PT. I've put too much time into figuring out how to fix it already. Thanks again....
