I use the thunderbolt 3 option to connect my MTRX Studio to my Mac Studio, but I just picked up an Avid IO... do I simply connect that to the MTRX Studio using digilink cables and it will work without an HD box?

Avid HD IO (presumably) requires a DigiLink connection which requires an HD engine such as: HDX, HDN, HDNTB. So - the direct answer to your question is NO - you cannot use an HD IO without an HD engine.

Think of it like this - you have two A/D/D/A converters. They both need an interface. MTRX Studio can use TB3 and Digilink, but Digilink is still dependent on a host interface - either HDX or HD Native.
