what about the 16bit flag ?
I have no idea what my old client used to create this 16bit MP3. I have tried some new conversions but they appear as 32bit.

see attached example jpg

Yes, I had begun reading this, but my brain started to melt.
Unfortunately I have nothing to do with that client anymore, but I think they were using DP on an older mac.
That cursed MP3 just happened to be the first one loose in my Test Sessions folder when I did an import test.

I've tested it on High Sierra & Mojave. Same result.
However, it appears to be only certain MP3s, and this PT version is misreading flags leading to corrupt imports. Previous PT versions do not lead to corruption.

I'm not discounting this issue, but is anyone else other than Tweakhead seeing this issue? Are any other MP3 files getting corrupted in this way? Certainly if something causes full volume digital distortion as reported, that should be addressed to avoid equipment damage and even worse, hearing damage. If however it is isolated to a particular file or files created under certain circumstances, then the issue may be less prevalent than implied by the title of this thread. I have imported about 50 MP3 files into PT 2021.10 yesterday without any issues.

It seems to be a highly isolated issue -- not exactly an all-caps sticky warning.

I only tested and responded to the thread started by PMF Media (who also mentions file corruption in a later post in the thread):
https://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=417555

I agree that it's not as pervasive as I initially thought. After my first scary test, I had erroneously assumed it was all MP3s. I had strangely happened to pick what appears to be the only MP3 in my collection that exhibits this behavior, and almost blew my monitors. I simply didn't want anyone else to experience the same, if they weren't as quick to hit the mute button.
The warning sign is simply any kind of GUI freeze during import.
Perhaps Jeffro can amend the title to something like "Be Careful When Importing MP3s Into PT 2021.10"

Here's a picture of why I typed my first line in all caps, in case you think I was being alarmist:

I totally understand the initial concern. I would be alarmed also. Now that the dust has settled, we have a clearer picture of the extent of the issue. Given that is is inappropriate to share the file that gets corrupted by the import process, it would be difficult for Avid to "repro" the issue. I'm not sure what can be done if that is the case. If anyone else experiences this, please post so it can get addressed properly.

i've imported 2 mp3's so far with no issue. I wonder if it is the method of importation that causes the issue. I always use import audio dialog from force of habit and rarely drag and drop.

Im running 2021.10 in mojave on a 2010 mac pro 3.46ghz.

Thanks for the additional info from everyone. I think it's safe to un-stick this thread since we haven't been able to repro with anything other than that one file. (Still hoping there's a way for us to get a copy - NDA us or create a similar file from the same system?)

EDIT - broke out other MP3 import issues to https://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=417555
