That's a good question, because Autotune produces about 3400ms of latency, so I removed that and stacked up a bunch of UAD plugs to simulate the same amount of latency and same problem. Again, downgrading resolves the issues.

Out of curiosity, have you tried opening up Instrument View and seeing if the problem happens if you set the MIDI output directly to the VI plugin instead of "Chain In"?

Also, are the notes only printing late, or do you also hear them late as you're recording? In previous versions of Pro Tools, notes sound late while recording (by heavy plugin latency like Autotune on another track), but they print exactly when you hit them (not where you heard them when playing), which is also problematic.

NO Auto Tune was involved. Just Midi and VI

Printed late and sound late as printed.
There was No way to cancel Chain Mode.

Not sure if this is related. I'm still in 2023.12.1, having recently upgraded from a PT 2021.6, 5,1 cheesegrater HDX rig to an M1 Studio Ultra 64GB RAM. I am finding the MIDI WAY zippier on the new rig. But I am also finding I still have to jump through the same annoying hoops on this new rig when I am recording MIDI in sessions with a bunch of plugins, ie. I have to disable any high CPU plugins, and disable plugins on MIDI Aux tracks that introduce enough latency to be annoying. And/or I will turn off Delay Compensation. Should I be having to do this on an M1 Studio Ultra with a Buffer of 64? I am currently working on a mix with the Weiss De-Esser on a few tracks, which is a CPU hog. I have about 6000 samples total system latency, and I can't record MIDI without annoying lag. I have to disable the Weiss De-Essers, and disable any Non-VI plugs on VI Aux tracks. Should I be having to do this? (I use Aux tracks for all VI's. That should be fine, right?)
My expectations for Pro Tools MIDI are soooo low that I almost don't think about it anymore. But could it, should it possibly work better in terms of ADC, MIDI latency, etc.?? My main issue has to do with recording MIDI, the latency between pressing the keyboard and the sound. So frustrating...

If you trash the prefs does it go away. and if you then open another session or start a new one does it come back?

Going down the path of ADC issues, I did a save session in, downgraded to 2023.9 and then tried to do an insert bus to a aux track. Still loads of latency. I did pull up the instrument menu and make the change to the proper midi vi instrument / channel and this resolved the issue.

So thinking that was the main issue, I did a full uninstall of 2023.9, upgraded to 2024.3.1 and then made sure all the midi outs were set properly and the issue returned.

Going back to 2023.12, setting them either way had no effect, and things worked as it was supposed to.

Hi Marianna, yes I trashed prefs by using the Avid Uninstaller which asks if you want to trash all PT preferences.

I have a feeling this is highly related to another open case I have: 04787750. I'm not a software engineer, however a solution engineer (SE) by trade and I believe ADC on midi is (technical engineering term) dorked up.

I think I'm mostly following y'all.

But yeah just to reiterate, I think it's useful to consider two different events when testing this stuff:
  1. when you hear the notes trigger while playing/recording
  2. where they actually print on the timeline

I'm suspicious that I actually think this new behavior might be correct, not a bug. If you hear a note late because of plug-in latency and it prints at that delayed moment you heard, that seems correct. (Gotta turn off the big latency plug-ins, admittedly super annoying).

If you hear a note late because of plug-in latency but it actually prints at the exact moment you hit it (earlier than what you heard while playing), that seems wrong to me. That's the previous behavior.

Most ideally, you'd hope they could make it so that whatever VI you're currently playing/recording both sounds and prints without any delay at all, no matter what delay-inducing plugins are active.

I have done a lot of testing on this since seeing this thread. This is definitely a major bug for sure. Check out my screen recording (forgive me breathing and clearing my throat lol)

MIDI Latency

It is clear that using Chain In vs. using channel 1 of the plugin on the track does not provide a different result as far as the MIDI printing differently than how it does on playback. In my testing with two Pro-L 2s it is always early! Seems like it must be a pretty gnarly bug that needs to be prioritized.

I can only hope that it will be of top importance to fix this for 2024.6! Deciding if I should revert...

Same thing with Auto-Tune as Pro-L 2. Nothing related to specific plugins. Entirely related to delay compensation generally being messed up for recording MIDI data on this version of PT.
