Default AUSTRALIAN POST ENGINEERS - OP 59 new standards for broadcast

So.... predictions/thoughts/comments?

My prediction is stations will be the last to adapt and will let non-OP 59 compliant material through for the next 12-18 months.

Meaning the dynamic jumps between loud and quiet material will be even more noticeable to start. New loudness metering methods (as described in OP 59) are great but they only work if everybody adopts.

Hey Dave, supposedly Dec 31st is the cut-off for delivery outside the OP59 -24LKFS spec, and it will be interesting to see if the stations (or Adstream and the like) start rejecting.
I've been doing my long form stuff to OP 59 for the last couple of months, but my commercials have been closer to the -19LKFS mark.
The biggest offenders on the loudness side tend to be the station promos....they certainly push them hard!

Yeah, this is going to be interesting. It seems that Dubsat won't necessarily 'reject' but modify the material. This could be scary.

I'm amazed at how hard it is to get a 1:1 dub.

(Added you to my SC contacts too mattrixx...its VPDavid. If I need an Adelaide VO I'll definately give you a holler)

Just had a chat with guys from Ebus, and they said they will reject anything above -23 after 31st Dec.. (in NZ)
And they will too offer services to "fix" the loudness.

Well after a few months of OP59 I'm noticing that my monitoring level has gone up a few notches to compensate for less RMS while mixing hard sell Ads, but for the more sparse stuff, or long form, I'm back to my old, lower monitoring level.
I did an ad last week that dropped .5 LUFS after I added music to it. (I guess it must have stopped the gate working around the dialog, and pulled the average down.)
I'm wondering if a dialog based anchor system would be more appropriate, I'm finding the blanket -24Lufs is making it hard to get a good ratio of Music/FX vs Dialog for short form.

Using dialogue only is a terrible idea (as not all tv is dialogue based)..and that is why the EBU have abandoned it. Poor old America is stuck with the nonsense of either Dialogue or whole prog measurement and that is why their regs are pages wide and the EBU r128 doc is one page. Simples.

Here Here! It doesn't need to be more complicated. Just realistically good & universal to the ear, in numerous outcomes and platforms.
It's been working well for me. However, still noticing station promos aren't conforming.

None of that is true.
