strange crashing problem MIDI

i'm having a problem with my 7.2 hd1 on a pac pro.
I'm trying to raise the velocity on all of the bass drum hits in a BFD track. and PT crashes every time. it seems to have somethng to do with having the velocity layer shown. sometmes it freezes right after i make the adjustment and sometimes it happens when i hit play or save after the adjustment. i trashed prefs and databases and restarted, ran disk utility, even did a clean install (for a different problem) but still crashes with velocity layer showing on a MIDI drum track.
any ideas?
