Default Asus MOBO - what\'s the secret

I'm "running" an 02R on a machine with an Asus A7N8...(something) motherboard. After FAR too much messing around with it, LE generally runs, with one big problem:

=> using any of the keyboard keys during playback often causes it to stop playing and complain about holding off interrupts too long. In extreme cases, it prevents me from starting playback by using the spacebar.

Running Win XP (SP1). There's plenty of memory. Most all functions not required for audio work are turned off. Small number of tracks (<8), small number of plug-ins.

I think people are sucessfully using set-ups very like this. There must be a solution, right?

I have the a7n8x-deluxe.

you have to get an add-on firewire card. I have the adaptec 4300.

getting the fw card, and a oxford 911 chipset FW hard drive cured all of my problems.

I have the onboard FW also, and PTLE runs really poorly on it.

I have the A7N8X deluxe and had some issues as well. I picked up the SIIG 3 port PCI card and the problems went away.

OK, thanks. Just to make it this far, I had to put in a firewire card. Maybe I got cheap one and that's the difference between working and working great.

Chipsets do seem to matter. FWIW, The Adaptec 4300 with this MOBO seems to be a great combo. I had a cheap one, and returned it to get the 4300. Best Buy carries is for about $35-$40.

I am assuming you have an AGP video card? A pci card would put an lot of strain on the PCI bus which seems to cause PTLE problems.

I have one that i used to use as a second monitor. Had a ton of PTLE problems with it. ended up getting the Matrox p650. The p650, the 4300 and the FW hard drive. No PTLE problems anymore.

OK, a year later, I stumble on it. The Firewire card is sharing an interrupt with the keyboard, hence the contention. By moving the firewire card to another PCI slot, (swap it with the SCSI card), the FW card gets assigned a different interrupt. Problem solved.

No excuse for this sort of sillyness. Ever.
