G4 mirror door Mix + OS9 - move up to OSX PT6 ???
PT - G4 mirror door - OS9 Mix + shifting over to OSX PT6 - expansion chassis problem?
Hi Folks! (long time no see over here!) We have a dual boot Mirror door G4 1.2 gig With a very old Bit 3 7slot expansion chassis with one Mix core & 6 Mix + cards.. OS 9.2 on PT 5.1.3 When we try to boot up PT 6.1 It gives us blacked out dual monitors 'no computer signal' We have to yank the video card and put it back in again to get the screens going again. Any ideas? Thanks Jules |

Re: G4 mirror door Mix + OS9 - move up to OSX PT6 ???
This was a classic problem with the dual 867 G4s. The problem if I remember correctly was that the PCI slots were underpowered and adding PCI cards caused the video card to black out. Do you have any other cards in the actual G4 other than the Expansion Chassis Host Adapter? If so, remove them.

Re: G4 mirror door Mix + OS9 - move up to OSX PT6
interesting...
Well yes indeed we DO have other cards... A dual ATTO SCSI card A Stealth port card.. running Serial midi We COULD ditch the stealth & SCSI card... sure.. and hop over to firewire & USB midi Our 2 x USB ports have 1 x Ilok 1 x qwerty Keyboard BY THE WAY on OSx boot up - it gives messsage "cant find Digi Hardware We can tinker around a little - obviously I am not keen to wreck my system in the process Thanks for tha advice so far Please KEEP IT COMING!!! |

Re: G4 mirror door Mix + OS9 - move up to OSX PT6
Time for different machine. You could sell your current one and pick up a FW800 model (still dual G4), and I would bet the problem would go away if it was related to the first generation MDD models. You would lose OS9 boot capability, but that's what you're moving away from anyway, so I guess that would be okay. Hope you can figure it out!

Re: G4 mirror door Mix + OS9 - move up to OSX PT6
Yes I would cut down on the cards. I had this problem a lot on a dual867 when using a SCSI card. So I ditched it. And USB midi for sure.
But why only 6.1 and what OS are you using? I'd go to 6.4.1 and up the OS as far as you feel comfortable. |

Re: G4 mirror door Mix + OS9 - move up to OSX PT6
Jules,
Haven't checked gearslutz today, but had you only posted there, I would've answered! Ditch the SCSI and serial MIDI. SCSI is overrated and serial MIDI is not supported by Digidesign with OS X. Do you have a 1st generation machine as suggested? Single or dual 1.25GHz G4? I have late model duals of that lineage, and they are filled with PCI cards, and they work as they should, though I don't use them with OS 9. Good luck!

Re: G4 mirror door Mix + OS9 - move up to OSX PT6
I was not suggesting you leave SCSI behind Jules, simply to test to see if removing the cards makes your video symptoms disappear. SCSI drives still kick the ass of anything else when it comes to zooming in/out on waveforms rapidly and dealing with very high edit density.
One of my Pro Tools systems is an old Dual 867 with a Mix++ and a Magma Expansion Chassis. I have all the Pro Tools cards in the chassis and the SCSI card in the mac. It works fine now, but when the cards were in the G4 I had the exact same symptoms you describe. This was years ago I had to deal with this, and it has been fine ever since. Just work thru the problem logically. If removing all the cards except the host adapter works, then add them back until it fails. Once you know the culprit, then you can deal with the problem. Is it the stock video card that came with the G4? Is the SCSI card a UL3D? I would for sure recommend USB MIDI. I use a basic little Edirol unit, and it works perfectly. |

Re: G4 mirror door Mix + OS9 - move up to OSX PT6
Thanks Tweakhead I think you are getting warm with the video card question....
I have since been advised... That I need a New NVIDA card with dual adaptors (old Apple studio display monitors) and that a pro max 64meg nvida in main slot will do it. Semms my old video card will NOT work with OSX.. I will order one first thing monday and see how we progress.. Thanks again! |
