Default M-Audio 2626 vs. 002R/Blacklion Mod

I am replacing a broken Mbox 2 Pro and dont want to give up Pro Tools. So I am looking at either getting a M-Audio 2626 and going M-Powered or sticking with LE and getting a 002R and having it Black Lion modded as the convertors are really important to me.

The thing is, the 002R+BLA mod will cost me over twice as much as the M-Audio 2626.

I am wondering if it is worth it. I will use this in a project studio to record vocals and mix and master songs (thus the convertors being important).

Anyone heard both of these and care to comment on a comparison?

Sound quality wise I haven't heard a audio input device top the sound quality of a BLA modded 002! At least, none under $2500 with as much as inputs as the 002... I have one at my studio and I'm very pleased, to say the least, with the sound quality of it. Not only the playback has improved big time, my recordings sound so much better now, it's unbelievable...

BLA talks about a certain 'fatness' added to your sound and I've been making some hiphop lately that (of course) has to be fat.. My customers were blown away!!

I haven't compared it to the 2626, and as far as input/output count it tops the 002 big time. If you need that many of simultaneous ins/outs you should get it. But if you don't, and you have the cash to back it up I would most definitely go for a BLA modded 002! (if possible 003, since that's the latest digi device and will be supported longer..)

This issue was beaten to death recently in a couple of threads...use the search function.

If you actually read that thread you'll see the original poster specifically said that he was unable to test the 2626 against the BLA mod, going totally against what this thread is about and making your post very unhelpful.

You won't find anyone that has done a useful comparison between the 2 units...but you will get endless opinions on either side of the argument. If you actually search for and read all the threads regarding the mod you'll see what I'm talking about.

Why not save your money and buy a high-end convertor that will actually make a difference?

Hence, the other side of the "argument".

Why not get a 003R modded, then raise your rates and make the money you spent on the mod back. Everyone who does business with me had absolutely no qualms about me raising what I charge a little after hearing recordings made with the mod, and it paid for it self in a little over a month.

Results may vary of course, but I think it was worth every penny.

Now, as has been said, you're not speaking with someone who has compared the two. Also, I learned of the mod after owning my 002R for a few years.

Would I have bought a 002R, had it modded, versus buying a 2626 and getting straight away to work? I don't know about that.

It was a matter of improving (quite a bit) something I already had, where there was no real option of getting that type of quality increase without crossing a significant price gap.

Since it sounds like you don't have anything right now, go with what will get your work done at a level acceptable to who you're doing it for. I guess the question should really be is how a stock 003 compares to a 2626?

IMO, getting the 003R will leave you with the option of a relatively low cost, but (IMHO) high quality mod for the 003R or saving for a high-end converter.
